Biography

Christoph Antons has a background in law, Southeast Asian studies and art history. He is an Affiliated Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Innovation and Competition in Munich; Senior Fellow at the Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn; and Senior Associate at the Centre for Indonesian Law, Islam and Society (CILIS) at the University of Melbourne.

Christoph has held academic positions at Deakin University, the University of Wollongong, Charles Darwin University, La Trobe University and Griffith University and visiting fellow, senior fellow and/or visiting teaching appointments at Stanford Law School, University of Melbourne, Max Planck Institute for Intellectual Property Law, Queensland University of Technology, Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Private Law, Graduate School of International Development at University of Nagoya, International Institute of Asian Studies at Leiden University, IP Academy Singapore and the University of Surabaya in Indonesia. He has been a consultant to the EC-ASEAN Intellectual Property Cooperation Programme (ECAP) in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos and has lectured in training seminars organised by UNDP and the United Nations Transitional Authority for East Timor (UNTAET). He was a QEII Fellow of the Australian Research Council (ARC; 2002-2008); Director of the Centre for Southeast Asian Law at Charles Darwin University (2000-2002); Director of the ARC Key Centre for Asia-Pacific Social Transformation Studies (CAPSTRANS; 2003-2004) and of the Centre for Comparative Law and Development Studies in Asia and the Pacific (2004-2011) at the University of Wollongong and Chief Investigator of the 'IP in Asia' project at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (2005-2016). He is an Associate Member of the International Academy of Comparative Law and received the Schloessmann Award of the Max Planck Foundation for the Advancement of Science in 1998.

Christoph is currently the project leader of the ARC Discovery projects 'Food security and the governance of local knowledge in agriculture in India and Indonesia' (with Michael Blakeney, Kadambot Siddique, Philippe Cullet, Yunita Winarto, Greg Acciaioli and Jagjit Plahe) and 'Intangible cultural heritage across borders: laws, structures and strategies in China and its ASEAN neighbours (with William Logan, Carol Warren and Jianfu Chen) as well as sole investigator of the ARC Discovery project 'Building an intellectual property system: the Indonesian experience' .
