Cultural Capability Training
Our Commitment to Indigenous Education and Engagement
We maintain a longstanding and deeply embedded commitment to advancing Indigenous education and engagement in genuine partnership with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
As a sector leader in the enrolment, employment, and achievement of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the University continues to build on these foundations by fostering culturally responsive and inclusive practices across its campuses and regional footprint.
Cultural Capability Training 2:50
Our Cultural Capability Training is designed to build understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures, and contemporary experiences, equipping staff and students with the awareness and skills to foster genuine respect, inclusion, and reconciliation.
Training Co-designed with Community
A foundational element of this commitment is the development of the University of Newcastle Cultural Capability Training which has been delivered to all fixed-term and ongoing staff. The cultural capability training has been collaboratively co-designed with representatives from Awabakal, Worimi, Wonnarua, and Darkinjung communities, and has been highly effective in increasing the cultural knowledge and understanding of staff at the University.
Due to the powerful impact of this training and understanding that we have an important role in supporting the broader community, we are proud to offer the cultural capability training package for other organisations to engage with. The training is designed to help create a culturally responsive work environment through a better understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, histories, cultures, and contemporary issues.

How it works
The cultural capability training package consists of two parts.
