The University of Newcastle (UON) has been awarded the maximum five star ranking for social equity and equipping students with generic skills, according to the 2016 Good Universities Guide.

UON offers five star experience

The guide, produced by Hobsons, ranks and rates 39 universities across Australia in five categories which include Characteristics, Access and Equity, The Student Body, The Educational Experience and Graduate Outcomes.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic, Professor Andrew Parfitt, said UON's consistent five-star result for social equity was a strong reflection of the University's commitment to providing access to higher education for talented students from all walks of life.

"UON continues to lead the sector in the proportion of students from non-traditional backgrounds enrolled in our degrees and this exceptional track record of supporting motivated and talented students is an enduring commitment to excellence and equity at the University," Professor Parfitt said.

The guide also confirmed UON among the best tertiary institutions nationally for generic skills, awarding the University top marks in the category.

Professor Parfitt said generic skills, such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving, were highly sought-out characteristics in a graduate employee.

The University also scored a four-star rating in research grants and research intensity, as well as three four-star ratings in The Educational Experience rating in staff qualifications, teaching quality and overall satisfaction.

Professor Parfitt said the rankings of four-stars across research and education experience was great news for students and a tribute to the work of our outstanding staff.
