Building skills for a future in technology
For Jeremiah Nutangi, studying overseas was about more than earning another qualification. It was a chance to challenge himself, experience life in a new country and build the skills for a career in technology.
After completing a Bachelor of Computer Science Engineering in India, Jeremiah made the move to Australia to continue his studies. Today, he's completing a Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at the University of Newcastle.
"I decided to study this program because of my interest in technology and the opportunity to develop advanced skills that can contribute to solving real-world problems."
Choosing to study overseas also meant finding a university where he could grow, feel supported and make the most of every opportunity.
"I chose the University of Newcastle because of its supportive learning environment, diverse community, and strong reputation for providing quality education and practical learning opportunities."
One of the things Jeremiah has enjoyed most is learning alongside students from different backgrounds. Working together on projects has given him new perspectives and helped him develop skills he'll take into his future career.
"Some highlights of my degree have been gaining practical knowledge, working on group projects, and learning from people with diverse backgrounds."
One group assignment, in particular, reminded him just how important a supportive community can be.
"I felt a strong sense of belonging while working on a group assignment with classmates from different backgrounds. Everyone was supportive, respected each other's ideas, and worked together as a team, which made me feel welcomed and valued at the University of Newcastle."
As his studies have progressed, Jeremiah has become more confident putting what he's learnt into practice.
"What stands out to me is the quality of teaching, supportive lecturers, practical learning opportunities, and the focus on applying knowledge to real-world situations."
Like many international students, Jeremiah balances university with part-time work. When it's time to settle in and study, the University Library is his favourite place on campus.
"The library is the facility I enjoy the most on campus. It provides a quiet and comfortable environment for studying, accessing resources, and focusing on my coursework."
Receiving a scholarship has also helped him focus on making the most of his time at university.
"It has provided valuable financial support and helped me focus more on my academic goals. The scholarship has also motivated me to continue working hard and make the most of the opportunities available at the University of Newcastle."
Looking ahead, Jeremiah hopes to build a career where he can keep learning, work with emerging technologies and create solutions that make a difference.
"What excites me most about my chosen career is the opportunity to work with emerging technologies, solve real-world problems, and continue learning in a rapidly evolving industry."
His advice for future international students is simple: say yes to new experiences and don't be afraid to get involved.
"My advice for international students is to be open to meeting new people, participate in university activities, and make use of the support services available."
For Jeremiah, it's often those experiences outside the classroom that become the most memorable.
"Building connections and staying involved can make the transition much easier."
