Leading with data, driven by people

For Emmanuel Okputu, studying artificial intelligence is about more than technology. Through the Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, he's learning how data can solve meaningful problems and improve people's lives.

Originally from Nigeria, Emmanuel chose the program because it brought together everything he enjoys most.

"I decided to study a Master of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence because it brings together the subjects I enjoy most: economics, mathematics, statistics, and programming."

For Emmanuel, data science isn't just about analysing information. It's a versatile toolkit that can be applied across industries to solve real-world challenges.

"Data science is a versatile toolkit. Once I understand a particular field and have access to quality data, I can use data science and AI to uncover insights, answer important questions, and contribute to evidence-based solutions."

When deciding where to study, Emmanuel was looking for a university with a future-focused program that would prepare him for a career in artificial intelligence. He also valued Newcastle's welcoming community and the opportunities to grow both academically and personally.

"The program's modern curriculum and strong focus on emerging technologies aligned perfectly with my career goals."

Within the degree, Emmanuel chose to major in Computational Intelligence, giving him the opportunity to build specialist expertise while developing skills that can be applied across a wide range of disciplines.

"I chose to major in Computational Intelligence because I want to develop the skills to conduct meaningful research across different disciplines."

As he's progressed through the program, Emmanuel has gained a new appreciation for the theory behind data science, particularly the role mathematics plays in understanding artificial intelligence.

"Through this degree, I have come to see mathematics as the language that underpins data science and artificial intelligence."

He's also come to appreciate how each subject builds on the last, from mathematical foundations and databases through to data wrangling, visualisation and real-world problem solving.

"What stands out most to me about the quality of education at the University of Newcastle is the emphasis on understanding rather than memorisation."

Supportive lecturers and a curriculum designed to develop understanding rather than memorisation have helped Emmanuel build the confidence to pursue a career in research and innovation.

Outside the classroom, Emmanuel has embraced opportunities to connect with other students. As an International Student Ambassador and leader of the University's Hip Hop Club, he's built friendships, developed leadership skills and found a strong sense of belonging.

"Joining clubs, attending events, and meeting people from different backgrounds helped me build friendships and find a sense of belonging."

Looking ahead, Emmanuel hopes to combine research, teaching and innovation to help shape the future of artificial intelligence.

"I hope to one day become a lecturer or educator who helps students understand not just how AI works, but why it works."

His degree has prepared him to apply those skills across industries including healthcare, education, finance and community wellbeing.

"These experiences have prepared me to pursue a career where I can apply these skills to meaningful research and create solutions in areas such as healthcare, education, finance, and community wellbeing."

For Emmanuel, making an impact also means ensuring AI is developed responsibly.

"I am also passionate about the responsible development of AI. As these technologies continue to shape society, I want to contribute to creating ethical, trustworthy, and environmentally sustainable AI solutions that improve people's lives while minimising potential risks."

His advice for future international students is simple: get involved.

"Most importantly, don't isolate yourself. It can feel uncomfortable to step outside your comfort zone at first, but taking that first step to introduce yourself, attend an event, or join a club can lead to lifelong friendships and a strong support network."
