Moving from China to Australia to study is a big step. For Yudie Qiu, it marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with change, opportunity and new experiences.

Now studying a Bachelor of Commerce at the University of Newcastle, she is turning her interest in business into practical skills while building a life in a new country.

“I've always wanted to be an accountant and interested in how shares and the share market works. That’s why I decided to do commerce.”

When choosing where to study, Newcastle stood out for both its lifestyle and affordability.

“The reason why I picked the University of Newcastle is compared to other cities and universities, the cost of living in Newcastle is cheaper and the University has a very good reputation.”

Her family supported the decision, seeing it as a chance to grow and experience something new.

“My family believes that studying abroad is a great opportunity for me to learn more about the world, experience different cultures outside of China, and learn to respect the cultural diversity. It's also a wonderful opportunity to develop my independence and improve my English.”

Arriving in a new country came with its challenges, but small moments helped her settle in.

“When I first arrived, I contacted the school's airport pickup service, they are very kind and friendly. On the way to Newcastle form Sydney, the driver shared his experience and told me a lot of useful information.”

On campus, she quickly found her rhythm, with the library becoming her go-to study space.

“I really enjoy the library where I go to for most of my study time. The library has a great study atmosphere, the facilities and Wi-Fi are excellent, and I can get some free coffee if I run out of my own drinks.”

She also values how convenient everything is nearby.

“There are also convenience stores and pharmacies not far from the library on the Callahan campus, so if I urgently need something, I don't have to spend a lot of time commuting, which is really convenient.”

When challenges came up, Yudie found support by reaching out.

“I once got stuck on a section of an assignment for a long time, and because a family member was sick and I needed to take care of them, I didn't have much time to finish it. I felt extremely anxious and stressed as the assignment was due soon. Feeling helpless, I contacted my teacher, Heather. She arranged a Zoom meeting, went over the relevant points with me, and guided me on how to apply for an extension.”

She has also explored her future career through university events and industry opportunities.

“The school organises some career planning-related activities, and I've participated in some. It's a great opportunity to talk to top figures in the industry and learn more about its knowledge and shortcomings.”

Alongside her studies, Yudie also works part-time. This allows her to manage her schedule in a way that works for her.

“On the days I have class, I will normally get up early and do some preview and after class I will choose to go to the library for an hour or so, to do a summarise of the lecture, and fill up my note. Also on Sunday night, I will do a total review of what I have learned in the last seven days and redo some of the workshop questions that I was confused with.”

Outside of university, Yudie enjoys Newcastle’s relaxed lifestyle and spending time with friends.

“I normally go hiking or camping with my friends if it’s a long weekend. The days I don’t have work or classes; I often go to the beach to chill and relax. Also, I do a little bit of cooking, when I feel very enthusiastic.”

Looking ahead, Yudie has a clear direction for her future.

“I want to be an accountant or work in a bank.”

What excites her most is the variety and challenges her career could bring.

“Meet different people every day and dealing with new challenges.”

Her advice to other international students is to stay open and not be afraid to ask for help.

“My advice is not to be nervous, and to boldly ask for help when you encounter difficulties. The people here are very friendly and welcoming, and everyone will be happy to help you.”

She also encourages new students to be patient as they adjust to a new way of learning.

“When you first enter university, you might find that the way classes are conducted is different from what you learned before, but don't be nervous, just go with the flow.”

From taking the leap to study overseas to building a routine that works for her, Yudie is shaping her own path.
