Max is making the most of his time at the University of Newcastle by combining his studies with practical, hands-on industry experience. As a student of the combined Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Data Science programs, Max is already experiencing what it means to work in computing and data.

Max's fascination with computers and programming started in primary school and grew stronger in high school. He enjoyed studying mathematics, computing, software design and information processes.

"I’ve always loved studying and learning, so I started uni straight after I left high school," Max said.

"I chose The University of Newcastle because I’m a Newcastle local. It allowed me to study and save while still being near my family."

Initially, Max planned to pursue a Bachelor of Computer Science, but a presentation by Professor Pablo Moscato on the Data Science program at Open Day opened his mind to further possibilities.

"The power of data and the insights it could provide captivated me. So, I chose a double degree in Computer Science and Data Science,” Max said.

One of the most significant aspects of Max’s study journey thus far is his involvement in the APS Academy Campus program as a cadet.

In this role, Max has gained entry-level, part-time employment at the Department of Health alongside his degree. Working from Callaghan campus, he has been able to complement his theoretical studies with real-world applications and experiences.

Max first learned about the APS program through a friend's dad who lectures at the University. Intrigued by the opportunity to gain industry experience, he applied for the program, which offered great benefits and flexibility around his studies.

"My favourite thing about the program is the culture of the workplace," Max said.

"All the cadets work from the same campus at the University, and everyone is nice and friendly. My team at the Department are also very friendly and happy to help."

Max has already enjoyed multiple work trips to the Department of Health headquarters in Canberra. These trips allowed him to network with experienced colleagues, attend workshops, and gain a deeper understanding of how large organisations operate.

Max's real-world experience has significantly impacted his studies. While his courses introduced him to the statistical programming language 'R,' it was through his data modelling work with the Department of Health that he truly mastered it.

"I’ve been using R more often to help with problems, check my answers and even investigate things outside the normal course content that I thought were interesting," Max said

The APS cadetship has equipped Max with valuable industry knowledge and practical tips from his coworkers. This experience, combined with his exposure to corporate systems and protocols, has prepared him well for future roles in both the public and private sectors.

"I’ve gained a lot of knowledge about the industry through the cadetship," Max said.

"I’ve been able to get plenty of guidance and tips from my coworkers that will help me work smarter and more efficiently in the future."

Max's experience as an APS cadet has been transformative, providing him with the skills and insights needed to succeed in his future career. Whether he continues in the public service or ventures into the private sector, Max is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead.
