The decision for Daniel to return to study wasn’t made lightly, but a lifelong passion for helping young people, sparked through volunteering, helped him take the leap.

After more than two decades in corporate communications and change management, one University of Newcastle’s postgraduate student is proving it’s never too late to change careers—and make a difference.

Based in Sydney, Daniel is currently studying a Master of Teaching (Secondary), mostly online with some face-to-face components at the University’s Callaghan campus.

“I use the Sydney Campus all the time as a base for online classes — it's such an awesome study space and the library has everything I need,” Daniel said.

The decision to return to study wasn’t made lightly, but a lifelong passion for helping young people, sparked through volunteering, helped him take the leap.

“I’d been supporting young people at my local AFL club for years, and I realised that teaching would allow me to do that every day. With the current teacher shortage, it felt like the right time to contribute in a meaningful way.”

With a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Wollongong already under his belt, Daniel embraced the challenge of returning to study head-on. He credits the strong course structure and mentorship of educators like Professor Robert Parkes for making the transition smoother.

“Professor Parkes has been my superhero. He’s helped me navigate subject selection to meet NSW teaching requirements and inspired me to be a quality educator.”

While balancing study with ongoing rehabilitation from a serious injury, support from the University’s AccessAbility team and student services helped him stay on track.

Once he has graduated Daniel plans to move to regional or rural NSW to teach, live, and give back.

“I’m really excited by the idea of becoming part of a regional community—not just in the classroom but through volunteering at the local football club or other community initiatives.”

The University of Newcastle’s trimester model and flexible structure have allowed Daniel to fast-track the degree while picking up additional subjects to qualify in multiple teaching areas.

For this passionate trail runner and footy fan, it’s not just about a career change—it’s about making an impact.

“It’s never too late to follow a new path. The University of Newcastle has helped me turn a passion into a profession.”
