AI Ambitions from Pakistan
For Abeeha, studying at the University of Newcastle has been more than just an academic pursuit. It’s been a transformative experience that bridges cultures, careers, and curiosity.
An international student from Pakistan, Abeeha is currently completing her Master of Data Science and Artificial Intelligence.
With a prior background in electrical engineering, Abeeha’s interest in data science was sparked during her final year of undergraduate study.
“Courses like databases and advanced machine learning opened my eyes to the power of data,” she said. “I’ve always been curious about how raw information can be transformed into meaningful insights. That process fascinates me.”
The University of Newcastle’s inclusive and well-rounded program structure was a key factor in her decision to study here.
“The program welcomes students from diverse academic backgrounds, which suited me perfectly,” she said.
“It offers a strong balance across statistics, data science, and machine learning.”
Abeeha was also awarded the STEAM Excellence Scholarship, a merit-based award that recognises high-performing students.
“Receiving the scholarship was a huge honour. It made pursuing my studies here more accessible and motivates me to keep striving for academic excellence.”
One of the highlights of her experience so far has been the program’s flexibility.
“In my first semester, I only needed to be on campus one day a week, with some courses available online,” she said.
“That made it much easier to balance study with my part-time job at Woolworths.”
As a Team Member in the Fresh Service department, Abeeha works weekends, giving her time during the week to focus on her studies.
“The commute is also convenient—there’s a shuttle from the train station that drops us right in front of the building where our classes are held,” she said.
“Outside of classes, I love listening to music, reading, and spending time with my nephew, especially on our little park adventures.”
“I also enjoy exploring Sydney whenever I get the chance - there’s always something new to see and do!”
The program’s practical focus has already paid off.
“In just one semester, I’ve added two to three new skills and tools to my CV,” she said.
“I’ve started applying for data-related roles and have even received some positive responses.”
Looking ahead, Abeeha hopes to move into a data-focused role that allows her to turn insights into impact.
“I want to work in a position where I can help businesses make better decisions through data. I’m especially interested in reporting, analytics, and data optimisation,” she said.
