The 20-year-old Bachelor of Education (Secondary) student chose the University of Newcastle because of its proximity to her Central Coast home as well as the city’s relaxed lifestyle.

Paris studies at the Callaghan campus, which she says has a mix of modern facilities and a relaxing bush setting.

“I love the vibrant and open landscape. The campus is always bustling with activity as something’s always happening,” she says.

“The facilities at the University of Newcastle have been super modern and state of the art. Whether it be lecture and tutorial rooms or the advanced sim teaching room.”

Paris says the quality of the facilities are matched by the standard of the teaching staff.

“I have many mentors and teachers that positively shaped my time at Newcastle. They helped me with enrolments, meeting requirements and I feel supported in my learning.”

Paris particularly enjoyed the opportunity to take the lessons from her studies and apply them to the real world. She says the mix of theory and practical experience has made her career ready.

“I have had two integrated placements, completing a simulated teaching experience in my first year and an in-school placement at Kincumber in my second year.”

“This experience enhanced my learning by showing me my future career. As teaching is a hands-on degree, having the best tools and skills is key, which is learned on the job in real time.”

Paris says the Aboriginal education and inclusive education courses were particularly impactful, offering her an opportunity to focus on language, cultural experiences and inclusive teaching methods.

She also came away from the placements with improved expertise and a better understanding of the challenges in the field.

“These experiences have equipped me with new skills, industry connections, and practical knowledge, preparing me well for my future career as a teacher,” she says.

“I have also learned to speak slowly and professionally, enhancing my communication skills, which are crucial for effective teaching.

“Last year I received 100/100 in one of my courses. I was so proud of myself and my achievement. The course being one of teaching content and lesson plans made me excited for the future.”

A love of learning and a desire to be a positive influence on others led Paris to pursue a teaching career after leaving school.

Some of the key highlights of my degree have been the practical placement experiences, where I gained hands-on teaching practice and real-world insights into the classroom environment.
