In 2023, Rachel McGuire took the leap to pursue further study to undertake a Master of Business Administration to elevate her professional development after 20 years of experience within the finance sector.

Having completed previous qualifications in a Bachelor of Commerce and postgraduate Certified Practicing Accountant (CPA), the Master of Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Newcastle meant Rachel could improve her skills and apply theory to the workplace.

She states, “I completed my previous studies through the University of Newcastle and had a positive experience, and I knew that completing my MBA through Newcastle, I would receive a high-quality education experience.”

As a part of the degree, Rachel enrolled in an elective course covering strategic management. Incorporating both theory and practical experience with a real-world client, this course was designed with the intent to further students’ professional skills and capabilities. Students also develop industry knowledge and practical skills through debates, case studies and participation in corporate policy activities.

Reflecting on her experience throughout the course, Rachel says, “This [client] was in an industry I was unfamiliar with, allowing me to push myself outside of my comfort zone and grow new skills that I have utilised in working life.”

Currently, Rachel works as an Executive Finance Manager and credits the program with furthering her career goals and enjoys the fact that she can balance her study and working commitments.

“The flexibility of part-time and online study is what initially drew me to the MBA program, as I had the ability to achieve my academic goals whilst balancing my other commitments.”

“The MBA will 100% support my future career path, as I believe it was a contributing factor to my recent promotion,” she states.
