Thanks to the flexibility and variety of courses available at the University of Newcastle she is now on track for a future in business or finance and already has practical experience in her chosen field.
The native Novocastrian is now in her fourth year and studying a Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in Accounting and Finance.
“I initially wanted to pursue a marketing major but soon realised I am a very analytical learner, and that commerce would suit me a lot more,” Holly says.
“I really enjoyed the first year because you get a taste of all the majors that UON have to offer in Business. I did a first-year introductory course in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, and it sparked an interest in me that I didn’t know I had.
“I really liked learning about how to start a business when you have a new business venture or idea.”
Holly says she enjoys studying at NUspace, set in the heart of the Newcastle CBD and housing the Newcastle Business School as well as related disciplines such as the School of Law and Justice.
“All the staff are here to help and there are so many people that can help you with any queries or struggles. All of the lecturers and academics are really knowledgeable in their field and help you succeed in your studies.
“The technological facilities at NUspace are amazing, with a marketing lab, finance lab and large rooms that have built-in computers and even the room for law students with built in microphones – it accommodates all business and law study areas.
“The Greater Bank Finance Lab is a very accommodating with the double screens for those assignments that require excel calculations and data analysis,” Holly says.
As her journey progressed Holly enjoyed opportunities to enhance her academic work by gaining practical experience through work integrated learning programs and industry partnerships.
These included working at the University of Newcastle Tax Clinic, which offers services to disadvantaged individuals and small businesses, and the Greater Bank Finance Academy, which put her into school classrooms teaching financial literacy to students.
“I am very passionate about financial literacy, since working as a finance ambassador and teaching high school students basic fundamentals of finance it has made me super passionate about helping young adults make good financial decisions,” Holly says.
“I thoroughly enjoyed my experience at the Tax Clinic where I was the first point of contact for appointments and sat in meetings with the tax agent. This role helped me gain hands on practical experience dealing with tax and financial issues in a supportive environment.
“I enjoy all things finances, ways to save and make money and learning about investing in my future is very interesting to me and hopefully one day I can help someone else with their finances or taxes.
“I would love to start my own business venture one day and with the help of my commerce knowledge I feel that I would be well equipped to start one.”

Holly McKelligot began university hoping for a career in marketing, but soon found herself drawn in other directions.
I value the facilities here at NUspace, in an office-like building you are able to study in an environment that closely relates to your studies.
