Cathy chose to study at the University of Newcastle for academic and social benefits, with hopes of driving change in the healthcare industry upon completing her degree.
Chinese student Fenzhi Wen, well known to peers as ‘Cathy’, chose to study a Master of Nursing at the University of Newcastle when she found that the program would not only allow her to build upon her professional development, but she would also have access to an English Language Bridging Program (ELBP).
She says, “I chose to study here so that I could improve my English language skills and nursing skills.”
Having previously completed a Bachelor of Medicine at the University of South China, Cathy chose the University of Newcastle to pursue postgraduate opportunities due to the positive feedback that she received from former students.
“The friendly and diverse community here has made my experience truly enriching, allowing me to connect with people all over the world.”
With a passion for leadership, teamwork and strong communication skills, Cathy says that the ELBP course has been an integral part of building her confidence and has allowed her transition into university to be as smooth as possible.
“The ELBP course has allowed me to learn a lot about culture and customs and has also been very helpful in my adaptation to the environment here.”
The Master of Nursing is a program that allows students to gain a specialised qualification that is related to their area of interest, building upon their professional development.
Cathy says, “Once I complete my studies, my goal is to work as a registered nurse in a hospital or become a staff member at the university.
“I believe that my strong foundation in English, leadership and teamwork will be valuable in these roles, and I hope that I can make a difference in healthcare.”
In her spare time, Cathy enjoys playing Badminton through the University’s Badminton Club, and creating friendships with other students.
She adds, “I always try to spend time with my friends exploring the great outdoors. We will usually take weekend trips, attend cultural events, or explore the city of Newcastle together.”
Recently, Cathy successfully became a finalist in the 2024 NSW International Education Awards. Cathy is one of four students successfully nominated for the "NSW International Student of the Year Award - English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS)".
Cathy says, "The award encourages me to continue excelling in my university studies. It makes me feel more confident for future goals, especially in my academic journey or career aspirations."
Cathy talks highly about her academic experience and feels that Newcastle was the perfect city to move to, due to its vibrant community and openness to international students.
“Newcastle is known for its welcoming and vibrant community; it makes me feel at home as an international student.
"Offering a mix of world culture and opportunities to connect with other international students, the city of Newcastle offers me a rich, cross-cultural experience.”
