Alumni Award for Outstanding Volunteerism - 2024

Brendan Swift’s journey from communications graduate to prominent Lawyer, and Director, in Melbourne, emphasises his commitment to understanding people and fostering meaningful connections. Brendan has distinguished himself not only through his professional expertise but also through his deep-rooted dedication to community and volunteerism.

For over a decade, Brendan has been a dedicated and enthusiastic alumni volunteer for the University of Newcastle. Since joining the Melbourne Alumni Chapter's leadership team, Brendan has played a pivotal role in engaging and supporting the Melbourne alumni cohort, significantly contributing to the University's goal of maintaining a vibrant and connected community in the region.

Upon moving to Melbourne, he noticed a gap in support for people who had moved from Newcastle, many of whom struggled to establish themselves in their new city. Determined to bridge this gap, he organised events to connect Newcastle alumni with one another.

“We organised quite a few functions in Melbourne, where people from all different disciplines in the University would come along. I saw a great deal of connection grow out of people being introduced to others that were from the same area, discipline and where they came from.”

Brendan’s proactive approach extends beyond local engagement. As a member of the university’s Alumni Advisory Committee since 2020, he has offered invaluable advice, expertise, and innovative ideas, enhancing the University's outreach and engagement efforts. His volunteer activities have had a profound impact on the University’s commitment to excellence, equity, engagement, and sustainability.

“I think volunteering is essential for all communities to work well. There are people who have benefited from having learned from the past. And if they can pass that on to people in the future who are coming through, I think that's essential.”

Brendan’s efforts have also facilitated relationships between outside organisations and the University of Newcastle’s School of Law and Justice, contributing to the preparation of the next generation of legal professionals. By fostering these connections, he has helped ensure the long-term success and sustainability of both the University and its alumni, promoting a culture of inclusivity and support.

Brendan’s career is marked by his role as a problem-solver and connector. His approach to law is not merely about addressing legal issues but also about guiding clients through challenging times, ensuring they feel supported and understood.

As a lawyer, Brendan is acutely aware of the emotional and psychological toll that legal disputes can take on individuals. His commitment to his clients extends beyond legal advice; he strives to provide a lifeline of support and understanding, often referring clients to additional resources when needed.

Before establishing his own legal firm, Altus Lawyers, Brendan’s initial experiences shaped his view of the law as a profession that blends logic with a profound understanding of people.

"My professional life could be split into two. One is the lawyer I was before I started my own firm and the other is the lawyer I am after. I think the first one valued facts and logic over people and the second one values people over logic. I think the combination of those two parts make me the lawyer I am today."

Brendan Swift’s life and career embody a commitment to service, connection, and advocacy. Through his legal practice and extensive volunteer efforts, he continues to make a significant impact on his community and the University of Newcastle. His contributions exemplify the spirit of volunteerism, fostering a sense of belonging and support while preparing future generations for success.

“If I was talking to my younger self, I'd tell him that people are the most important factor in anything you do. The better people skills that you get and develop, the better your life will be.”
