Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin
Alumni Award for Outstanding Volunteerism - 2022
Captain Mohammed Faiz Kamaludin has followed his passion for science and for flight in his 30-year career as a pilot and science educator.
Faiz was one of four candidate finalists representing Malaysia in the National Astronaut Programme for the 2007 Soyuz TMA-11 mission in Moscow, Russia. Inspired by the achievements of these astronauts and cosmonauts, Faiz undertook his Master of Aviation Management with the University of Newcastle in 2011.
"Studying at the University of Newcastle was an early experience that shaped who I am today in terms of driving me, motivating me, and looking at issues concerning sustainability and social entrepreneurship,” said Faiz.
Faiz has established awareness programs aimed at promoting the knowledge of science across Malaysia through his roles as President of the Astronautical Association of Malaysia, and as the Director of Aerospace Education Services. His passion is evident in the high level of engagement he has fostered across his region and the University was proud to recognise Faiz’s efforts with a Regional Leadership Alumni Award in 2011.
The University is again delighted to recognise Faiz’s contribution, and this time back to his alumni community and the University itself.
2022 Alumni Excellence Awards
Faiz has always remained connected to the University. His commitment to the Malaysia Alumni Network, as Vice President from 2016 to 2021 and now as President, has been transformational. Through his natural leadership and exceptional people skills, Faiz has inspired his fellow alumni network leaders with a clear vision and plan for the network. This plan has provided a robust structure for alumni to regularly connect while undertaking meaningful activities such as career talks for young alumni, family hikes and social networking events.
Faiz has been instrumental in promoting the Global Alumni Ambassador Program, encouraging others to share their alumni story and have a positive impact on the next generation of students. His efforts have helped this new program gain momentum, opening a door for alumni to become valued volunteers, sharing their love and pride for the University from their local region.
This year, Faiz demonstrated tireless effort in promoting the University’s inaugural Gifting Day throughout his network. Through his advocacy, Faiz helped to raise much-needed support for student scholarships, critical research and community programs.
