National Leadership Award - 2022

Combining her passion for medicine with an interest in technology, Dr Amandeep Hansra is a leader in digital health and innovation in Australia.

With the fast-paced development of new technologies, her goal is to ensure healthcare doesn’t get left behind and is sustainable for future generations.

“We have an opportunity to improve the healthcare system …using the innovation and digitisation of our generation and the opportunities it provides,” said Amandeep.

Amandeep credits her experience at the University of Newcastle for helping her to become a leader within her field.

“The University motivated me to want to do something great. Not to just accept the status quo, but to really change the whole system,” said Amandeep.

It’s Amandeep’s entrepreneurship and leadership that has led her to instrumental roles in telehealth services such as Medibank’s Nurse Triage and GP After Hours, as well as Telstra’s Readycare, for which she served as the CEO and Medical Director.

During COVID, she helped set up the National Coronavirus hotline and provided training to over ten thousand clinicians, in the provision of telehealth services during the pandemic. Across this period she successfully contributed to lobbying for Medicare funding for telehealth services.

As a GP with 17 years clinical experience, Amandeep is well placed to identify areas of need in the system and to bring various stakeholders together for innovation and change. Amandeep co-founded Caligo Health, providing consulting services to state and commonwealth governments, hospital groups, insurers, start-ups, health services, investors, and businesses. She is also a Clinical Reference Lead for the Australian Digital Health Agency and a board director across a range of different organisations.

Amandeep has a passion for medical start-ups and entrepreneurship, advising and supporting start-ups in the health technology space. She is the co-founder of Australian Medical Angels (also backed by the Victorian government’s LaunchVic) – a community of over 600 doctors who invest in health technology start-ups that has already raised over $5 million for investments into the health technology sector.

As well as fostering growth and innovation in healthcare, Amandeep is focused on safeguarding the wellbeing of medical practitioners. She founded Creative Careers in Medicine, an organisation with more than 16,000 members which supports doctors as they navigate their career options and assists in empowering, supporting, upskilling, and preparing them for their future.
