Statistical Support Service

The Statistical Support Service (StatSS) provides advice on statistical methods to help university students and staff engaged in research. The service is intended to provide low cost and non-profit statistical support for University of Newcastle researchers.

We can assist researchers with:

  • study designs and surveys
  • data analysis
  • writing up statistical results
  • grant or project proposals
  • seminars/workshops/courses in statistics for individual or School/Discipline needs.

Undergraduate summer vacation scholarships 2019/20

The Faculty of Science undergraduate summer research program can be undertaken in a variety of research areas and provides students with a valuable and rewarding experience working with well-established researchers in high quality research environments.

The scholarship holder has the opportunity to participate in a voluntary six week research program within the Faculty of Science on a research topic provided by the Faculty. This participation should be primarily a learning experience and should take place between December 2019 and March 2020. Successful applicants will be able to negotiate attendance, based on their availability, with their academic supervisor.

This program is an early introduction to aspects of Honours Year research. The program is available to students currently enrolled in 2nd or 3rd year of an undergraduate program offered by the Faculty of Science.  Details regarding the current Summer Research Topics identified as being of interest to the Faculty can be found below

A limited number of scholarships are available valued at $2,000 each. For information on the conditions and how to apply online please refer to the Scholarships website.


HDR awards

Faculty of Science Higher Degree by Research (HDR) awards for ‘Outstanding Research Student Achievements’ are designed to promote excellence in research, recognising outstanding achievements in research, research innovation and engagement.

The Faculty Research & Research Training Committee (FRRTC) has established three (3) new outstanding research student achievement awards listed below.

HDR Conference Scholarships

Provides funding support for HDR candidates to attend an 'International Conference'. Students may apply for up to $2000 to help support the costs of airfare, accommodation and conference registration plus an additional $1000 to help facilitate a visit to a research laboratory/facility where appropriate. As it is a highly competitive scheme, applicants are advised to discuss their options with their supervisor's.

HDR Research Support

To support your research project, you will have access to $1,750 (pro-rata for part-time candidates) each year. After approval from your School, this money can be used for expenses such as travel to a conference or consumables you might need to carry out your research. Applications may be received at any time between February and September each year.
