Partnerships Power Innovation: Newcastle Industry Open Day Strengthens Regional Connections

The University of Newcastle's second Industry Open Day for 2026 brought together 180 industry leaders, researchers, and innovators, building on the momentum of May's successful Hunter Industry Open Day. The July event showcased the University's expanding research capabilities and strengthened its position as a key driver of regional innovation.

Opening the official proceedings, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Global) Professor Belinda Tynan emphasised the University's commitment to industry collaboration. "Today represents more than just networking – it's about creating meaningful partnerships that drive real change in our region. The innovations you'll see today demonstrate how academic excellence and industry expertise can combine to solve real-world challenges," Professor Tynan said.

The professional development workshops kicked off the event. The Strengthen Workforce Capability Through University Engagement workshop, delivered by the Careers and Employability and Institute for Regional Futures provided insights into the transitioning workforce in the Hunter region and discussed pathways for industry to engage with student talent.

Delivered by I2N, the Practical AI Workshop attracted significant interest as participants explored the rapidly evolving AI landscape of 2026, and the Cultural Capability session provided valuable insights into creating inclusive workplaces.

The Research and Innovation Showcase and expo included researcher pitching and displays from Advanced Manufacturing, Sustainable Futures and Health Innovation to Digital Transformation, Creative Industries, and Social Impact.

A highlight of the afternoon was the engaging fireside chat between industry leader Tain Drinkwater and Vice-Chancellor Professor Alex Zelinsky AO, which sparked dynamic discussions about regional development, co-design and cross-sector collaboration particularly in sport and business.

This was followed by the Young Voices panel, where emerging leaders shared fresh perspectives on regional innovation, sustainability, and technology advancement. Thank you to our panellists:
