Careers Service

The Careers Service is available to support both current and past students of the University of Newcastle. Depending on your needs, we can provide advice online, by phone, Zoom, or face-to-face.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to COVID-19 restrictions in NSW, the Careers Service is not currently available for face-to-face appointments. However, students can still book in for a phone or Zoom appointment, or send enquiries through the Ask A Question button within CareerHub.

The Careers Service offers career consultations to current and past students of the University where you can meet with an Employability Consultant who can assist you with your career development and decision making. This service assists individuals to identify personal career goals and develop strategies to achieve those goals. Consultations are approximately 20 minutes in duration.

To make an appointment to discuss your career, phone us on (02) 4921 5588 or request an appointment through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub.

When requesting an appointment, please indicate what you would like to discuss at the appointment. Also include the specific time and date of your preferred appointment from those listed in CareerHub, and your preferred method (phone or Zoom). If by phone, please confirm your phone number. Please note that face-to-face appointments are not currently available due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Students based at the Port Macquarie campus can also access the TAFE Counselling Service. To book a consultation, phone 1300 628 233 or speak to Student Central in the Library. The TAFE NSW career advice website also contains useful information.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources that are designed to help you with each step of your job application. This includes resources on resumes, cover letters and selection criteria - all designed to help ensure you have covered every step to land that job.

Career Essentials also has a range of useful tools to help you polish your job application. This includes a cover letter builder, resume builder, and Resume Reviewer. By uploading your draft resume to Resume Reviewer, you will receive instant, detailed feedback as the tool scores your resume against more than 50 automated checks. After making changes you can reload your resume to see how your score has increased.

If you would like feedback on your job application documents (resume, cover letter, selection criteria, etc) you can upload your documents through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub and a Careers staff member will provide you with feedback within one business day.

Please note that, due to COVID-19 restrictions in NSW, the Careers Service is not currently available for face-to-face appointments. However, students can still receive feedback on their job application documents through the Ask A Question button within CareerHub.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources that are designed to help you through the interview process. These include videos and information sheets on interview preparation and presentation, typical interview questions, and more.

Current and past students of the University also have access to two online tools where you can practice interview questions - Interview360 in Career Essentials and InterviewStream.

Interview Preparation

To speak to someone about interview preparation, phone the Careers Service on (02) 4921 5588 or request a phone or zoom appointment through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub. Please note that face-to-face appointments are not currently available for this topic due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Mock Interview

Once you have done some preparation, you can also book in for a mock interview with a Careers staff member.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources which can help you to craft your LinkedIn profile.

If you would like help creating your LinkedIn profile or if you would like feedback on how to improve your profile, you can book in for a LinkedIn profile review with a Careers staff member.

Graduates of the University of Newcastle are welcome to access support from the Careers Service. If you no longer have access to CareerHub and would like to arrange a consultation, please complete the Alumni Career Consultation request form. A staff member will be in contact with you within two business days to arrange an appointment. Alternatively, feel free to phone us on (02) 4921 5588.
