The Careers Service is available to support both current and past students of the University of Newcastle. Depending on your needs, we can provide advice online, by phone, Zoom, or face-to-face.

The Careers Service offers career consultations to current and past students of the University where you can meet with a Career Consultant who can assist you with your career decision making. This service assists individuals to identify personal career goals and develop strategies to achieve those goals. Consultations last for approximately 20 minutes.

To make an appointment to discuss career decision making, phone us on (02) 4921 5588 or request an appointment through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub.

Please specify the time and date of your preferred appointment from those listed in CareerHub, and your preferred method (phone, Zoom, or face-to-face). Face-to-face appointments are available at the Callaghan, Newcastle City, Ourimbah, and Sydney campuses.

Students based at the Port Macquarie campus can also access the TAFE Counselling Service. To book a consultation, phone 1300 628 233 or speak to Student Central in the Library. The TAFE NSW career advice website also contains useful information.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources that are designed to help you with each step of your job application. This includes resources on resumes, cover letters and selection criteria - all designed to help ensure you have covered every step to land that job.

Career Essentials also has a range of useful tools to help you polish your job application. This includes a cover letter builder, resume builder, and Resume Reviewer. By uploading your draft resume to Resume Reviewer, you will receive instant, detailed feedback as the tool scores your resume against more than 50 automated checks. After making changes you can reload your resume to see how your score has increased.

If you would like feedback on your job application documents (resume, cover letter, selection criteria, etc) you can upload your documents through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub and a Careers staff member will provide you with feedback within one business day.

Alternatively, if you would prefer to receive feedback on your job application documents in person, the following options are available*:

  • Callaghan: Drop by our office to access our Career Express service in the Shortland Union Building between 9.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday (no appointment necessary). We are located on Level 3 (upstairs from Subway). You can view a map of the campus here.
  • Ourimbah, Newcastle City, or Sydney campus: You can book in for a resume check, cover letter review, or selection criteria review through CareerHub.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources that are designed to help you through the interview process. These include videos and information sheets on interview preparation and presentation, typical interview questions, and more.

Current and past students of the University also have access to two online tools where you can practice interview questions - Interview360 in Career Essentials and InterviewStream.

Interview Preparation

If you would like to have a chat with one of our staff about interview preparation, the following options are available*:

  • Callaghan: Drop by our office to access our Career Express service in the Shortland Union Building between 9.00am and 4.30pm, Monday to Friday (no appointment necessary). We are located on Level 3 (upstairs from Subway). You can view a map of the campus here.
  • Ourimbah, Newcastle City, or Sydney campus: You can book in for Interview Preparation through CareerHub .

Mock Interview

Once you have done some preparation, you can also book in for a mock interview with a Careers staff member*.

  • Callaghan, Ourimbah, Newcastle City Campuses: Book into a Mock Interview appointment by phoning (02) 4921 5588, or through the Ask A Question button in CareerHub. Please specify the time and date of your preferred appointment from those listed in CareerHub, and your preferred method (phone, Zoom, or face-to-face).
  • Sydney campus: You can book in directly for a mock interview through CareerHub.

CareerHub has a range of useful resources which can help you to craft your LinkedIn profile.

If you would like help creating your LinkedIn profile or if you would like feedback on how to improve your profile, you can book in for a LinkedIn profile review with a Careers staff member*.

Graduates of the University of Newcastle are welcome to access support from the Careers Service. If you no longer have access to CareerHub and would like to arrange a consultation, please complete the Alumni Career Consultation request form.
