Newstep Transition Arrangements

After a comprehensive review including feedback from current and past students, our University’s staff and external Higher Education experts, we will be combining Newstep and Open Foundation to form one program from 2022. Our goal here is to provide pathways to more students into the future and offer greater flexibility.

Please be assured that eligible students will still be able to complete Newstep this year. We are dedicated to ensuring you successfully complete your pathway to a university degree and will be supporting you every step along the way.

Use this webpage to track your progress and view your options to complete your Enabling Pathways program.

How to calculate your progress

Check your grades in myHub and add up how many units you have completed.

  • *Completed, or passed units include grades P, C, D, HD, UP or EX. For more information on grade codes click here. Please note you cannot attempt a course again that you have already passed.
  • Any Fail (FF), Withdraw (WW) or Incomplete (I) grades do not count towards completing your program.

Discuss your options

You are encouraged to discuss your options with your Program Convenor, they can help you decide on the best pathway to completion. They are available over the phone, over zoom or face-to-face on campus*. Please contact your Program Convenor to organise a time and location for a chat.

*Please note: face-to-face appointments are no longer advised due to the new COVID-19 requirements, please see our webpage for details.

Waiting for your Semester 1 grades?

You can book in a time with your Program Convenor for Monday 5 or Tuesday 6 July to discuss your options once your grades are finalised. Please email them below with 3 options that work for you across these days for a 20 minute chat, you'll receive a reply to confirm your booking.

Your options to continue

Now that you know how many units you have passed, please consider the following options to complete your program.

30 units or more completed

Continue in Newstep for Semester 2

If you have completed 30 units or more in Newstep you can continue and complete the program in Semester 2.

To assist with the program transition we are allowing students to complete Newstep this year with 70 units (reduced from the full 80 unit program).

  • EPHUMA123 Academic Literacies 2 will be listed as an elective and not as a core course.
  • You can choose however many courses it will take you to complete 70 units in total from the list of available courses below.

If in doubt, you should still choose courses from the recommended Program Plan to best prepare you for a particular degree.

Your Newstep program will still guarantee you admission into 40+ degrees at the University of Newcastle and be recognised for competitive entry into all other degrees.

If you continue in Semester 2 but aren't able to complete the full 70 units don't worry, we'll be in touch with further options and you won't be disadvantaged.

Transfer to Open Foundation

You also have the option to transfer into the existing 40-unit Open Foundation program for Semester 2. You will be offered up to 20 units of credit depending on the Newstep courses you have completed.

If you would like to transfer please apply for Open Foundation on our website.

10-20 units completed

Commenced in 2021

If you started Newstep this year and have completed 10 to 20 units you will be automatically transferred to our existing 40-unit Open Foundation program for Semester 2 after your Semester 1 results are released on the Fully Graded Date (July 2).

You will be offered up to 20 units of credit depending on the Newstep courses you have completed, and have 2 years to complete Open Foundation if you would like to study part-time.

You'll receive confirmation of your successful transfer and offer of credit via email by Wednesday 7 July.

Commenced in 2020

If you would still like to complete an Enabling Pathways program, we advise you to apply for Open Foundation to start in Semester 2.

You will be offered up to 20 units of credit depending on the Newstep courses you have completed, and have 2 years to complete Open Foundation if you would like to study part-time.

Please apply for Open Foundation on our website.

If you do not apply for Open Foundation, you will be administratively withdrawn from the Newstep program after the Semester 1 Fully Graded Date (July 2) according to the program requirements detailed in the Enabling Program Schedule.

You are also welcome to discuss your options with your Student Liaison Officer.
