"I had the privilege of being selected for the year-long Department of Rural Health (DRH) program in Port Macquarie. The staff at the Mid North Coast Cancer Institute welcomed me with open arms. They were incredibly supportive throughout my time there, always willing to help me out. They encouraged me to ask questions and seek explanations for anything I didn't understand. I was constantly curious and wanted to know more about the procedures and protocols. Not only were my mentors amazing, but I received respect and guidance from staff. They all went above and beyond to share tips and tricks to improve my skills as a radiation therapist. I felt like a second radiation therapist as I was able  to perform most duties under the guidance of my mentor. This hands-on experience was something I believe  I wouldn't have had in a different setting.

The people in Port Macquarie are friendly and down-to-earth. I always enjoyed chatting with the patients, as they were some of the sweetest people. It felt like a tight-knit community  where everyone knew each other. As part of the DRH program, the clinical educators in both Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie organised tutorial sessions tailored to our needs. They made sure we were well-prepared for future careers. The clinical educator even helped us with job interview preparation, which was incredibly valuable. We also had weekly reflection sessions where students from both sites could connect online and share our experiences.

The student accommodation in Port Macquarie was conveniently located just a short walk from the hospital. I lived with other allied-health students from Newcastle who were also on year-long placements. We had a blast participating in weekly multi-sport activities and attending monthly RESLIFE events such as winey visits, rock climbing and barbecues. These experiences brought us closer together and created lasting friendships. I also made sure to make the most of the beautiful surroundings by exploring the coastal walks and going on camping trips.

I highly recommend anyone considering a rural placement for your final year. The friends I made and the knowledge I gained have had a profound impact on me. I feel more confident and ready to embark on my career as a radiation therapist.

The smaller clinical centres, the supportive staff, the friendly locals and the vibrant community made my learning experience try unforgettable. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to be part of the DRH program and the incredible year in Port Macquarie."  Mackenzie Bain, Spectrum.
