These scholarships were established from the estate of the first Professor of French, Professor Kelver Hartley, at the University of Newcastle to promote the study of French and to assist students in this endeavour. Funding is derived from the Hartley Bequest administered by the executors, the Perpetual Trustees.

Applicable to: French students, Exchange students, high achievers


To be eligible to apply for this scholarship you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be enrolled in an undergraduate program
  • Be enrolled in either FREN2620, FREN3160 or FREN3701
  • Be accepted as an exchange student for a semester at the University of La Rochelle, France

  • A copy of your approval to take part in the University of Newcastle Student Exchange Program or pre-approved Summer/Winter Exchange.

The scholarship provides up to $7000 toward costs such as airfare to and from France, rail travel within France, visa, accommodation, a reasonable living allowance and health/travel insurance.


Selection of the scholar will be on the basis of academic merit, including performance in French courses.
