Description
If you are passionate about social justice and equity, if you wish to pursue a career working as an advocate for rights-based issues, or if you wish to gain greater knowledge and expertise for how to address matters related to equity, inclusion and diversity within your current organisation, then the Graduate Certificate in Professional Equity and Inclusion is a degree for you. All organisations and workplaces require attention to equity and diversity concerns. This degree will build your capacity for conceptualising, strategising, implementing and evaluating equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives.
This program is delivered in collaboration with the Centre for Excellence in Equity in Higher Education (CEEHE), a site for innovative research and practice seeking to address persistent inequalities and social injustice, at the University of Newcastle. The program will introduce you to key debates around equity, inclusion and advocacy, and you will gain key skills in promoting social justice and advocating for equity within institutional settings. You will graduate with a high-level understanding of social justice theory as this informs organisational and institutional practice, and become prepared to address equity and diversity concerns within your current and future workplace.
Program learning outcomes
On successful completion of the program students will have:
- Specialised knowledge about equity, diversity and inclusion, including skills to promote social justice and advocate for equity within institutional settings.
- Cognitive skills to review, evaluate and assess equity and inclusion standards within institutions and organisations, and to consolidate and synthesise knowledge about EDI to provide practicable solutions for social justice.
- Advanced inclusive writing and presentation skills for furthering equity, diversity and inclusion.
- Advanced understanding of the craft and practice of researching, evaluating and writing across EDI contexts.

Admission information
Admission requirements
Entry into the Graduate Certificate in Professional Equity and Inclusion will be available to applicants who have one of the following qualifications or equivalent:
- Bachelor Honours Degree majoring in Social Science or related discipline; or
- Bachelor Degree majoring in Social Science or related discipline; or
- Diploma, Advanced Diploma or Associate Degree in a related field plus two years’ relevant work experience; or
- at least five years’ relevant work experience.
Recognition of prior learning and relevant disciplinary knowledge will be assessed by Student Admission in collaboration with Program Convenor. Related fields include sociology, geography, anthropology and development studies, business, education, public health, human services, education, municipal community or social work/welfare, Indigenous studies and economics.Relevant work experience includes administration, research, development planner, local officer, educator, or manager.Work experience can be identified through: certified copies of all relevant qualifications, a detailed CV, and a statement of service or signed letters from employers confirming your role, duties and period of employment.Students who complete the Graduate Certificate in Professional Equity and Inclusion will be eligible for 40 units of credit towards the Master of Social Change and Development award.

Additional information
Through the Pathways and Academic Learning Support Centre, students can access a free suite of NUPrep preparation courses as well as Academic Learning Support.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.
