Biography

Dr Zakia Sultana is a Research Assistant within the Mothers and Babies Research Centre in the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr Sultana received a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Reproductive Medicine from the University of Newcastle in 2018. During her PhD study, Dr Sultana focused on identifying potential biomarkers of placental oxidative damage and aging in pathologic pregnancies. Dr Sultana developed an in vitro human placental tissue explant and a placental cell line culture models to test the pathways that regulate placental oxidative damage and aging in pathologic pregnancies. Her research also identified potential therapeutic targets that may arrest oxidative damage and premature aging to placentas in pregnancies identified at high risk.

Dr Sultana’s current research interests are cellular aging and metabolic function, where she continues to utilise her expertise in molecular biology, cell genetics and medical biochemistry to advancing current understanding of the molecular mechanisms of aging and age-related diseases and in identifying potential therapeutic targets.
