Biography

Dr You Zhou is an interdisciplinary and mixed-methods scholar specialising in cybercrime, future crimes, and digital policing. He recently completed his doctoral studies at Monash University, where his thesis, Policing Cyber Fraud in China: Challenges, Responses, and Crime Displacement, examined digital policing and transnational cybercrime through interviews with Chinese police officers. He also holds a Master of Criminology from the University of Melbourne and a Bachelor of Law from the Criminal Investigation Police University of China.

Before joining the University of Newcastle, Dr Zhou held academic roles at Monash University, Deakin University, and Charles Sturt University, including Assistant Lecturer, Teaching Associate, Research Officer, and Research Assistant. His teaching covers cybercrime, policing, crime prevention, and research methods. He has contributed to curriculum development through innovative, student-centred approaches that integrate empirical research, gamified learning, and inclusive pedagogy.

Dr Zhou has published in internationally recognised journals such as Computers in Human Behavior, Crime & Delinquency, and Law, Innovation and Technology. His research on metaverse crimes has received national media attention and was ranked by Altmetric score as the most influential criminology article in August 2024. He is currently serves as the leading guest editor for a special issue on Future Crimes in the Asian Journal of Criminology.
