Research Expertise
My research expertise is two fold.
1. Non symmetric nanosize molecular structures on metal and oxide surfaces.
I have had great success with synchrotron based experiments and continually utilize the Australian Synchrotron National facility as well as the OPAL reactor and is an expert in spectroscopy techniques. I have made significant contributions in knowledge in reactions on surfaces involving water, the structure of surfaces and nanostructures, and biofunctionalized films for device technology.
I have continually received beamtime at both the Australian Synchrotron and overseas. Dr Gladys has a user at Maxlab(Sweden), Elettra(Italy), Bessy II (Germany), NSRRC (Taiwan) and Australian synchrotrons with over 85% success rate and has generated a very good reputation in synchrotron physics. As a consequence, his expertise over these years has led to the appointment to the program advisory committee (PAC member) for the soft X-ray beamline (2010 - 2012) and reviews beamline proposals at the Australia and Elettra Syncrotrons.
2. Teaching Pedagogy in Physics with the focus on enhancing student experience in first year. I am particularly interested in first year teaching practice and have participated in several workshops and 1st year teaching conferences.
I have been awarded ethics approval, and published several papers on STEM education practice which have influenced the restructure of the new Bachelor of Science and Physics Subjects therein at the University of Newcastle.
Initiated a program in 2011 for advanced 1st year students to spend the summer vacation working with research groups in the department. This seems to have had a direct knock on affect with the retention of students in 2nd year physics in 2012 where some subjects have increased by 100%.
Teaching Expertise
I have taught most courses in Physics, including Phys1200, Phys1205, Phys1210, Phys1220, Phys1250, Phys2170, Phys2160, Phys3330, Phys3345, Phys3310, Phys3990 as well as HUBS2105, STAT1070, MRSC1010, SCIM2030, OHSE6060.
Summer Scholarship Program for 1st year Physics students $13000 from School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences (2017).
Faculty Teaching Grants for blended learning and marketing in first year physics (2017) $5000
Remote Labs development Grant – 3rd year MAPS Teaching Grants (2017) $5000
University of Newcastle, Centre of Teaching and Learning, funding for “multichoice mobile app” (2012) $2000.
University of Newcastle, Faculty of Science and IT Award for Teaching Excellence in 2009-2010.
Teaching developments
- Developed demonstrations for 1st year physics classes. This has been shown to improve student satisfaction of courses and retention of core knowledge (Awarded Faculty Teaching award for this work)
- Developed a cross platform mobile phone teaching app that allows lecturers to receive instant feedback in class for multiple choice questions. Currently used by the Faculty of Science and Mathematics at Newcastle. This technology is focussed on utilising the peer instruction methodology where students work together and answer calculation and concept problems. Using the app allows both students and instructors to see whether they understand the material.

Density functional theory together with ab initio atomistic thermodynamics has been utilized to study the structures and stabilities of the low index CuCl surfaces. It is shown that the Cl-terminated structures are more stable than the Cu-terminated configurations, and that the defective CuCl(110)-Cu structure is more stable than the stoichiometric CuCl(110) surface. The equilibrium shape of a cuprous chloride nanostructure terminated by low-index CuCl surfaces has also been predicted using a Wulff construction. It was found that the (110) facets dominate at low chlorine concentration. As the chlorine concentration is increased, however, the contributions of the (100) and (111) facets to the Wulff construction also increase giving the crystal a semi-prism shape. At high chlorine concentration, and close to the rich limit, the (111) facets were found to be the only contributors to the Wulff construction, resulting in prismatic nanocrystals.
