Career Summary
Biography
Dr Mathieu Figeys is a Senior Lecturer with the School of Nursing & Midwifery and a Registered Nurse in both Australia and Canada. With an interdisciplinary background, he is passionate about collaborative innovation, research, teaching, and learning.
Mathieu holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Alberta, where his thesis focused on the effects of non-invasive brain stimulation on cognition and brain blood flow in various populations, including stroke, older adults living with depression, and neurocognitive disorders. He also earned a Master of Science in Ageing and Health from Queen’s University School of Rehabilitation Therapy (Kingston, Canada) and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
Before joining the University of Newcastle, Dr Figeys completed research fellowships with the Department of Occupational Therapy at the University of Alberta and at the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital (Alberta Health Services), where he conducted and led several research and innovation projects utilizing technology in rehabilitation applications and to promote ageing well at home. He has additional experience in product development and validation studies with industry partners to facilitate commercialization.
Clinically, Dr Figeys has near-decade of experience as an Emergency Department Nurse in Canada, with additional training in adult, paediatric, and trauma resuscitation.
Currently, Mathieu is focused on developing and implementing innovative technological solutions to promote ageing well, preventing cognitive decline, and is interested in conducting randomized controlled trials to assess the effectiveness of non-invasive brain stimulation in various populations. His wide range of research interests includes:
- Stroke rehabilitation
- Dementia rehabilitation
- Non-invasive brain stimulation
- Functional neuroimaging
- Machine learning
- Artificial intelligence in the healthcare system
- Artificial intelligence in health curriculums
- Communication patterns between caregivers and people living with dementia
- Experience of stroke survivors as they undergo rehabilitation
