Biography

Kate Teal-Spicer is an Australian multidisciplinary creative working as an artist, writer and filmmaker from Newcastle, NSW.

Kate graduated from the University of South Wales (UK) in 2020 with first-class honours in BA 'TV and Film Set Design', during which she worked on various productions, including the BBC's Doctor Who (2019) and as the production designer on award-winning short film 'My Favourite Place' (2019), before moving back to Australia in 2020.

Kate has since worked on various projects, including two solo art exhibitions, several group exhibitions, art festivals, markets, live creation projects such as murals and workshops, videography and photography projects, art director on feature film 'Beat' (2021), and production designer on Luca Brasi's music video 'Party Scene' (2022). Kate later transitioned into more factual content production with the NSW Createability internship at ABC's Compass in Series 38 (2024), as a researcher.

In June 2022, Kate began her PhD at the University of Newcastle in Cultural Studies, creating a documentary 'Diagnosis: Female', which she made as a solo filmmaker, travelling over 9000km around NSW to interview women from all walks of life about their healthcare experiences. Her creative component documentary was accompanied by a written exegesis about documentary filmmaking utilising an ethics of care framework in a practice-based approach.
