Career Summary

Biography

I joined the University of Newcastle as a Senior Research Associate in mid-2017. I am highly experienced in applying engineering mechanics and Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) to troubleshoot, optimise and design bulk solid handling systems, having 15 years of consultancy and R&D practice including over a decade with TUNRA Bulk SolidsDuring my career, I have collaborated with more than 100 different industry, academia and government partners in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Oceania, Africa and the Americas on over 200 projects handling many different types of commodities. My expertise includes characterisation and sample preparation, design of process and plant, storage, handling and transportation equipment and facilities.

The focus of my part-time PhD (completed in 2013) was modelling bulk solid interactions in belt conveying systems. This included field verification of flow models, techniques of bulk solid characterisation and calibration of simulation parameters.

I have used my technical proficiency and strategic foresight to establish and build high impact multi-disciplinary collaborations with fellow researchers and a variety of stakeholders. I am actively translating research to build capacity, strengthen institutions and develop capabilities that are aligned with making a significant contribution to influencing society and the environment. My current primary research initiatives include:

  • ARC Industrial Transformation Hub for Advanced Technologies for Australian Iron Ore: Translation of numerical modelling expertise to engineering design management best practice and associated processes across West Australian Iron Ore Operations
  • Biomass and "Waste" to Resource/Energy: Characterisation for design of storage, handling, transportation facilities, techno-economic assessment and utilisation aligned with low emissions development strategies in Australia and the South Pacific
  • Dust and Particulates: Control, evaluation, management and safety along the handling supply chain including biological relevance

My supervisory experience includes 14 internship and 5 PhD students (1 recently completed). I have reviewed articles for scientific journals including Powder Technology, Applied Energy, ChERD and Biofpr as well as research proposals for the Polish National Science Centre (OPUS) and the Australian Research Council (Industrial Transformation Training Centre). Over the last decade I have lectured at more than 20 industry and postgraduate courses in solids handling, design and modelling, both in Australia and internationally, including at University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa and University of Sao Paulo in Brazil, where I hold visiting researcher positions. The content I present draws on first hand experience applying engineering principles, simulation/modelling tools and reasoned judgement to meet stakeholder demands and solve challenging industry problems.

Train load-out bins are generally large structures that employ flood loading chutes to rapidly load material into wagons. It is often important when designing these structures to consider the dynamic loads associated with the rapid unloading of the material as these loads can often cause vibrations. Typically, calculations for the dynamic loads are based on traditional continuum calculations coupled with site data, as the unloading rate depends on factors such as gate opening time, the corresponding outlet size, train speed, and material properties. The continuum approach has been previously illustrated in the past with a case study [1]. This paper will present results using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) on the same case study and will compare results in terms of instantaneous flow rates, as well as dynamic forces and accelerations of the flowing bulk solid during discharge.
