Career Summary

Biography

I joined the University of Newcastle as a Senior Research Associate in 2017, following 13 years of Engineering consultancy and contract R&D with TUNRA Bulk Solids, during which I completed around 200 projects and 300 technical reports in collaboration with more than 100 global industry partners. My expertise is in the application of Engineering mechanics and Discrete Element Modelling (DEM) to troubleshoot, optimise and design bulk solid materials handling systems and encompasses characterisation and preparation, design of process and plant layouts, handling, transportation and storage facilities.

I attained a PhD in 2013 (part-time), where focus was modelling bulk solid behaviour in belt conveying systems. This included field verification of flow models, techniques of bulk solid characterisation and calibration of micro-scale parameters. Prior to formally joining the University of Newcastle, I held the appointment of Conjoint Lecturer, with the School of Engineering, Faculty of Engineering and Built Environment (FEBE).

Within my current role, I am striving to lead and collaborate on strategic, multi-disciplinary projects and significantly increase the impact of my research. While advancing existing areas of strength, my focus is to develop new capabilities that are aligned with making a considerable contribution to influencing society and the environment. My current research initiatives include:

  • Biomass and Waste: Characterisation, handling, transportation and utilisation
  • Optimisation and Design: Minimising wear, increasing efficiency, improving performance, component and process selection
  • Maritime Regulation: Coal self heating assessment and evaluation
  • Dust and Particulates: Defining mechanisms for control, evaluation and management along the entire handling chain

I have supervised ten internship students (four undergraduates), and currently I co-supervise two PhD researchers. I lecture as part of the final year technical major/elective MECH4220 course at the School of Engineering, FEBE (since 2009) as well as professional development courses held internationally. For the past three years I have delivered postgraduate coursework in collaboration with the Conveyor Manufacturers Association and the Engineering Council at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa. The content I present draws on first hand experience applying Engineering principles, simulation/modelling tools and reasoned judgement to meet stakeholder demands and solve challenging industry problems.

Train load-out bins are generally large structures that employ flood loading chutes to rapidly load material into wagons. It is often important when designing these structures to consider the dynamic loads associated with the rapid unloading of the material as these loads can often cause vibrations. Typically, calculations for the dynamic loads are based on traditional continuum calculations coupled with site data, as the unloading rate depends on factors such as gate opening time, the corresponding outlet size, train speed, and material properties. The continuum approach has been previously illustrated in the past with a case study [1] . This paper will present results using the Discrete Element Method (DEM) on the same case study and will compare results in terms of instantaneous flow rates, as well as dynamic forces and accelerations of the flowing bulk solid during discharge.
