When Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) student, Temperance, decided to undertake semester exchange, she embarked on a journey to the United States of America to study at the University of North Carolina, Wilmington.

Temperance recalls that by living in the university dorms she was able to fully immerse herself in the American student life experience.

“I got the full experience of an American student, living in the dorms made it easy to make new friends and much more accessible to the campus. I made many friends from all over the world as they have an amazing cohort of international students,” she said.

Taking part in the global experience shaped her perspective of travel and encouraged her desire for future student exchange.

“I got to experience the different religious traditions by participating in the Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah through my history course at the University. This experience broadened my horizons so much that on my return to Australia, I ran for Vice President of the University of Newcastle Exchange Student Network to continue to make strong connections with people from all over the world,” Temperance said.

Describing her experience as inspiring, Temperance is looking to pursue further study exchange.

“The semester exchange helped inform my decision to study overseas in the future for postgraduate study. On a personal level, it has fuelled my desire to continue to travel all over the world,” she said.

Providing a different perspective to study, Temperance felt more knowledgeable about avenues into her dream future career.

“Through a series of seminars offered by the University in the history club, I learnt a lot about different ways into academia which is where I plan to work in the future,” she said.

Semester exchange was not all study for Temperance as she recalls travelling while in the USA on exchange.

“I used all eight weeks of travel allowed under my visa, with four driving from San Francisco across to North Carolina along the top of the USA and the final four driving back to San Francisco from University through the lower half of the country,” she said.

Temperance recalls the global experience as being the best of her life, strongly encouraging others to participate and research their opportunities.

“Research which experience is right for you, talk to the global experience teams or clubs if you are nervous and if you have a disability like me, do not think you cannot go – do your research on where is best for you.

“If you do end up going, make sure you try as many new experiences as possible,” Temperance said.
