Communications to Finance, covering all business bases
Sarah Voon lived in Malaysia and completed her Bachelor of Communication in 2012 through the University of Newcastle. Currently working as the Operations Manager for ESL FACEIT Group in Malaysia, Sarah oversees the local business and team in the thriving esports organisation.
Previously working as the General Manager and Regional Head of Growth at theAsianparent (The Parentinc), Sarah was responsible for the day-to-day operations of the business in Malaysia, overseeing a team of 35 employees locally and a larger regional team. Sarah utilised her study to understand the processes for running a business.
“My degree set a very nice foundation for me to start my career in a prestigious business publication in Malaysia, which propelled my career success overall to what it is today.
“Learning how businesses are run helped the most with real world application,” she said.
Recalling her study experience, Sarah is grateful for the compressed study to progress her further in her career from early on.
“One of the best things about the course was that it was compressed into 2 years for the degree rather than 3 or 4 years. This helped me to kickstart my career at a younger age compared to my peers and thus, building my career up to a point where I am ahead in years of experience versus others my age,” Sarah said.
Sarah was impressed with the high level of academic support and knowledge throughout the university to help with study.
“I think the lecturers were all of high calibre and cared about the success of their students,” she said.
Encouraging others considering study, Sarah speaks highly of the teaching staff and connections created through study.
“My advice would be to take full advantage of the opportunity in learning as much from lecturers as possible and keep in touch with lecturers after graduating. The network helps!”
