Rena completed her 10-week Advanced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) course prior to commencing a combined master's program which has led to her current role of Talent Acquisition Officer within the Medical Beauty industry.

Rena says the English Language Centre made her more confident in English speaking.

“I felt confident to speak English. I felt a little bit shame of speaking English and having any grammatical mistakes. Being a second language, it is important to study the native expression and communicate with other classmates; practice makes perfect.

Before starting her English Language study Rena lacked the emotional connection to the language.

“The English courses broadened my horizons. I saw the different values and ideas of classmates from different regions. I used to speak without any emotional level. After diving into the English environment class, I can easily catch the mood of other people,” Rena said.

Rena found her academic confidence and social abilities increased through the assurance the English Language Centre offered her.

“I used to have low grades during junior and high school in China, but I found myself here. I met different people in Newcastle, study hard, work hard, and play fun with my friends. I truly improve my skills,” she said.

Rena recalls the feeling of support and openness she felt while studying in the Language Centre.

“I felt supported. Everyone in the Language Centre is nice, kind, and friendly. It is encouraged to ask questions. There is a strong inclusive and diversity throughout the Centre. You meet different people from different regions,” she said.

Rena encourages anyone who is thinking of studying through the Language Centre to give it a go and take their study to the next level.

Studying Advanced English for Academic Purposes (EAP) with the English Language Centre gave Rena the confidence to continue her study and go on to complete a combined Master of Business Administration and Master of Human Resource Management in 2021.

The English Language Centre has broadened my horizons because I saw the different value and ideas from classmates who came from different regions.
