After completing a Bachelor of Environmental Science and Management at the University of Newcastle in 2015, and then Honours in 2018, Mitchell Aafjes has taken the next step in his studies, undertaking the Master of Environmental Management and Sustainability.

“With this program, I wanted to upskill and grow my theoretical knowledge in the environmental field while gaining industry experience and connections.

“I knew obtaining a master's degree would be highly valuable to employers too,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell describes the importance of environmental sustainability as a balance between environment, economy and the social factors that influence global issues.

“Environmental issues are becoming increasingly complex and different to manage and monitor.

“Understanding the ways in which these complex systems operate and form adaptive systems is one of the key areas,” he said.

Recalling the highlights of his studies so far, Mitchell reflected on the opportunity to travel to Japan for fieldwork study.

“I travelled to Okinawa, Japan for my Honours degree. That was a life-changing experience that I will never forget.

“I learned a range of new skills, met incredible people, and was lucky enough to experience the amazing culture while I was there,” he said.

Mitchell also noted that knowledge, access, and connections were on the list of highlights.

“Meeting industry professionals and lecturers, learning how to apply my theoretical knowledge to solve real-world problems, gaining access to a world-class library to study, and meeting a range of people with different backgrounds and professions helped shape my own professional journey,” he said.

In addition, the flexibility of the master's program also enabled Mitchell to continue working while studying.

“It allowed me to work full-time and study full-time and achieve great marks throughout my degree due to the flexibility of the program and the fact I could study anywhere!” he said.
