Maeve Brown has been working within NSW Health for the past 10 years in various leadership roles. Whilst working within these leadership roles, Maeve wanted to create a positive learning experience for students but had little formal education on how to do this efficiently.

“I was in my acting leadership role for over two-years and felt that I would benefit from formal education around leadership, managing clinical staff and improving my knowledge around quality improvement projects,” Maeve said.

Researching various programs to help gain knowledge landed Maeve in the Master of Clinical Medicine (Leadership and Management). This program provided her with a combination of leadership theory and management approaches.

“I was looking for a post graduate degree that would help me gain appropriate knowledge and give me a better chance of being successful in applying for a leadership role. I wanted a qualification that would be recognised by other health districts,” she said.

Reflecting on the structure of the program, Maeve explains she was able to balance study, work and personal life with the flexibility of online study.

“The structure suited me as I work full-time and was able to watch lectures in the evening and organise my time around work, study, and personal life,” Maeve said.

Starting in a new role recently, Maeve contributes her study and practical experience to the success in achieving this position and implementing her leadership and management knowledge.

“I feel the added qualification of nearly completing my masters as well as my strong clinical background was instrumental in me being offered the position,” she said.

Maeve attributes her study to providing her insight into being a good leader and becoming more efficient in her time management and guidance of students.

“I gained a lot of insight into how to be a good and effective leader through doing this program,” she said.
