For Dipti Darshika Lata, pursuing a Master of Midwifery at the University of Newcastle was an easy decision.

“The University of Newcastle has long been recognised for its commitment to academic excellence, innovative research, and a strong focus on practical application in the field of healthcare. The University's outstanding rankings and reputation, and the prospect of learning from experts and leaders in the field of midwifery, were significant factors in my decision-making process,” she said.

Despite holding a Bachelor of Nursing and a Graduate Diploma of Midwifery, Dipti felt compelled to further her education to make a significant impact on women in her homeland. She expressed that her decision was driven by “a deep passion for providing the highest standard of care to expectant mothers and their newborns and advancing midwifery care and education to another level. Knowing that I would be part of an institution with a strong track record for producing successful healthcare professionals instilled confidence in the quality of education I would receive,” she adds.

Having the opportunity to live in Newcastle while studying allowed Dipti to not only immerse herself in a vibrant coastal city, but also engage in campus life.

“From the moment I stepped onto campus, I felt supported by the friendly staff and fellow students, which provided a sense of belonging to the University community. Having access to modern libraries, research centres, and technology-enabled classrooms also contributed to a dynamic and enriching academic environment,” she said.

Dipti was also awarded an AusAID scholarship which helped to alleviate financial pressures and allowed Dipti to focus on her studies without the burden of having to worry about tuition costs or daily living expenses.

Throughout her studies, Dipti engaged with industry professionals through various events and initiatives, which helped her build valuable contacts and foster a sense of community within the midwifery sector. A highlight for Dipti was touring the maternity units and NICU at John Hunter Hospital, an experience tailored for international students. “During the tour, I had the opportunity to meet midwives and other healthcare professionals within the maternity and neonatal units, witness evidence-based midwifery care and share my work experiences,” she recounted.

Upon completing her master’s degree in 2023, Dipti returned to Fiji, ready to serve the people of her country in a new role as Team Leader at Rakiraki District Hospital. In this capacity, she leads a team of dedicated healthcare professionals in delivering high-quality holistic prenatal care to women. “The master’s program not only allowed me to enhance my clinical expertise, but also provided a platform to engage in critical research, evidence-based practice, and leadership within the midwifery realm,” she said.

Today, Dipti continues to provide outstanding healthcare to the community in Fiji. Throughout her nursing and midwifery career, she has been recognised as a committed and passionate individual who envisions uplifting the standard of nursing and midwifery in Fiji. “During the past few years, I have dedicated my expertise as a midwife, providing essential care and support to expectant mothers during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum phase,” she said.
