Beginning her Bachelor of Communication in 2018, Alexandra Rees’ love of writing, media and strength in public speaking flourished with the support of her friends and family.

“Having lived in Newcastle all my life with my family, I was fortunate to be living near of the best universities in the world, making it the obvious choice.

An unmatched love for writing, media and strength in public speaking inspired me to pursue a Bachelor of Communications degree,” she says.

Not only does Alexandra excel in her career, her passion for swimming has taken her to the Commonwealth and Olympic games trials.

“Since beginning my journey at the university, I have maintained an elite athlete status and believe a dedication to elite sport has moulded me into the ambitious young woman I am proud to be, together with the mental resilience to be headstrong in my endeavours,” she says.

Alexandra recalls being part of the last class to utilise the ICT building television studio for ‘Multiplatform Journalism.’

“In the studio we performed a live bulletin read which was amalgamated to replicate a proper news segment. Receiving high praise from my tutor solidified my dream to become a reporter and anchor within the broadcast media industry.’ she says.

Throughout her degree, Alexandra has completed practical work experience within the 2NURFM radio station to provide real-life experiences to her career.

“I was successful in securing a position in the newsroom and have been thoroughly enjoying the opportunities afforded to me by this fabulous radio station,” she says.

During her studies, Alexandra received a Friends of the University Elite Athlete Scholarship.

“Due to my achievements at the University National Championships, I received a Friends of the University Elete Athlete Scholarship. This scholarship has supported me to continue pursuing my swimming passions while maintaining a healthy balance with my degree.” she says.

Alexandra recalls the positive influence of her teachers has equipped her to be ready for the journalism industry.

“I have been incredibly lucky to have been influenced by a cluster of positive mentors that have both inspired and positively shaped my time at the University of Newcastle,

I feel ready and eager for the industry from the experience of working and meeting narrow deadlines, and the ability to multitask while producing high calibre work, all while adhering to the journalistic codes of conduct” she says.

Working with the 2NURFM team, Alexandra describes the experience as a pinch me moment.

“I was contacted by radio journalist and News Director Ian Crouch, asking me to be the student face for 2NURFM’s billboard promotion placed in Honeysuckle, further promoting the Work Integrated Learning program for the University,” she says.

Describing her experience at the University, Alexandra feels confident in her degree and the inspiration she has achieved from integrated learning.

“I very much enjoyed my time at the University, meeting all the different kinds of people within my degree, the collaboration of group projects and becoming inspired from the exposure to the multifaceted nature on offer from the Communications degree,” she says.
