Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (Joint Medical Program) | Graduated 2025

Yi Han Lee, a medical graduate of the University of Newcastle, is living proof that passion, curiosity, and a sense of adventure can shape not just a career, but a way of life. Originally from Singapore, Hann is preparing to start his career in orthopaedics and critical care at Gold Coast University Hospital in 2026.

“I’m passionate about orthopaedics, critical care, emergency medicine, and improving access to care,” he shares.

Diverse clinical experience

One of the highlights of Hann’s degree was the strong focus on clinical experience. Through the Joint Medical Program, he trained across metropolitan, regional, and rural hospitals, including John Hunter, Calvary Mater, Maitland, Belmont, and Bloomfield Hospital in Orange, NSW.

Hann also completed placements at Nippon Medical School Hospital in Tokyo and with the Royal Flying Doctor Service in Kalgoorlie, broadening his understanding of healthcare delivery across different communities and environments.

Supporting others along the way

Giving back was an important part of Hann’s university experience. He mentored neurodiverse students through the University’s AccessAbility Services, and worked as a high-level disability support worker with SIRV. He also volunteered as a mentor for lower-year medical students during fourth year, one of the most challenging stages of the program.

Life beyond medicine

Alongside his studies, Hann made time to pursue personal goals and stay active. In May 2025, he completed his first half-marathon in Sydney with HOKA and plans to take on another half or full marathon in the future.

He also gained experience in fashion retail and technology with Zara, Apple, and Neverland, and supported the Belmont Vaccination Hub during the COVID-19 pandemic by working as a pharmacy assistant.

Why the University of Newcastle was the right fit

When deciding where to study, Hann was looking for a medical program that balanced hands-on learning with a strong sense of support.

“I looked for a medical program that offered early hands-on clinical experience, a strong community focus and a supportive learning culture.”

He found that the University of Newcastle delivered this through its problem-based learning approach, smaller class sizes, and strong connections with the local health network.

“What I have valued most is the smaller class sizes and genuine sense of connection across the student body and local health network, creating an environment where collaboration and support flows.”

Beyond academics, Hann appreciated the broader student experience at the University of Newcastle.

“The University also provides extensive student support and social opportunities, from free food initiatives during exam periods outside the library to peer teaching sessions, friendly social sport competitions at The Forum and regular events at Bar on the Hill.”

Newcastle’s lifestyle also played a role in shaping his experience.

“The city offers a great balance between study and lifestyle, with major hospitals just minutes from the beach.”

Looking ahead

Reflecting on his time at university, Hann recognises the lasting impact of his experience.

“The University has provided an experience that has truly shaped both my learning and personal growth through its supportive educators, well-structured clinical training and community-centred approach to learning.”

From diverse clinical placements to mentoring peers and pursuing personal challenges, Hann’s journey highlights how learning, community, and purpose came together. All preparing him for the next chapter of his medical career.
