Born and raised in Newcastle, Maggie has always loved building things, from DIY projects at home to woodworking classes in high school. After completing a Certificate II in Construction Pathways during her HSC, she began her journey in the built environment with a Bachelor of Design (Architecture) at the University of Newcastle. After graduating at the end of 2024, she chose to continue her studies with the Master of Construction Management (Professional), which she expects to complete at the end of 2026.

“Ever since I chose the woodworking class elective back in Year 9, I fell in love with building things,” she says. “I have always been a creative person and I learnt that I could study Architecture and Construction Management at UoN, so I applied for both and ended up choosing to study my Bachelor of Design (Architecture), knowing that when I graduated, I would continue studying and complete my Master of Construction Management.”

One of the standout aspects of the program for Maggie has been construction law.

“I absolutely love learning all things construction law, from the Building Code of Australia, to WHS Law, to Contract Law. I love to understand the legal reasons behind things the construction industry has adopted and how to continue to make the industry safer from the legal perspective.”

She has also enjoyed the cost planning and estimating courses, which have expanded on the knowledge she gained in her architecture degree.

“These courses have helped me to expand on all of the knowledge I gained in my Bachelor of Design (Architecture). understanding how to develop concepts and models into tangible projects that suit the client’s budget.”

Studying full-time on campus, Maggie values the balance the program allows.

“The ability to work at my own pace, supported by on-campus tutorials, has really allowed me to maintain my hobbies and has given me a really solid life–study balance. The tutors are always so helpful and willing to work with you if you ever need support.”

After graduating, she hopes to work as a project manager, combining her background in both architecture and construction management.

“My goal is to work as a project manager with the ability to work closely with the designers and builders on a project,” she says. “My hope is that I will work on projects that have a positive impact on Newcastle, I am very interested in school and hospital projects that are coming up in the region.”

Her advice to future students?

“As with any study path, give it your absolute best and strive to learn more than just the minimum to pass the courses. Find a topic you’re interested in and deep dive into it, you never know where it will take you!”
