From ESL teacher to primary educator: Inspiring the next generation

After more than 20 years teaching English to adults, becoming a mum sparked a new ambition for Lili: to help young minds discover the world around them.

Originally from Brazil, Lili is a mum of two and an experienced English as a Second language (ESL) teacher who is now taking her passion for teaching in a new direction through the Master of Teaching (Primary).

“I have only ever taught adults, but since having children, I have found it immensely rewarding to see their minds expand as they discover the world around them, which inspired me to pursue this career where I can nurture their natural curiosity and help as many children as possible develop a love of learning.”

Lili had already been considering a move into primary teaching when an unexpected change in her career gave her the push she needed.
When COVID-19 closed international borders, the ESL industry was significantly impacted and the school where she worked closed its doors. It became the catalyst for a career change she had been thinking about for several years.

With a Bachelor of Arts in English, along with CELTA and TESOL qualifications, she chose the University of Newcastle after hearing positive feedback about the course structure and quality of the teaching staff. The opportunity to study online from Sydney was an added benefit.
Balancing full-time study with family life has been challenging, but she has a strong support network around her. Her husband and in-laws help with her two daughters, giving her time to study and recharge.

Despite studying online, she says the experience has felt connected and supportive.

“Although the course is delivered online, it never feels impersonal.”

She particularly values the approachable teaching staff, thoughtfully structured Canvas modules, group assignments and on-campus intensives, which have helped her build connections with fellow students and gain hands-on experience.

“The teaching staff are approachable and genuinely get to know their students, creating a warm and supportive learning environment.”

As a multilingual educator who speaks English, Portuguese and Spanish, Lili is passionate about multiculturalism and hopes to bring this perspective into her future classroom. She is looking forward to her first professional placement and plans to become a primary school teacher as soon as she graduates.

For Lili, this career change is an opportunity to draw on her years of teaching experience while helping a new generation discover the world around them.
