Lana Cossettini thrives on creativity, connection, and problem-solving, so it’s no surprise she’s found her place in the world of technology.

Studying a Bachelor of Computer Science at the University of Newcastle has been the perfect way for her to bring all those passions together and build a future she’s genuinely excited about.

Getting to university wasn’t exactly a straight path, and that’s what makes her journey so meaningful.

“After not completing the HSC, I decided to study a Certificate III and IV in Information Technology at TAFE. I was able to use these qualifications to get into a Diploma of Information Technology at the University of Newcastle, which was my pathway into the second year of the Bachelor of Computer Science.”

Those experiences gave Lana the confidence and clarity she needed, helping her realise just how well computer science fits her strengths.

“Computer science offers a unique balance of problem-solving, logical thinking, and creativity which are areas that align with my own interests and strengths, so pursuing this degree was a natural choice for me,” she explains.

Lana faced some challenges early on in her degree, but with support of peers and academic staff she quickly found her feet.

“I experienced some imposter syndrome having not come from a traditional study pathway. But through the support of my peers and academic staff at the University, I overcame this and have been successful in my studies.”

As her confidence grew, so did her excitement about the range of possibilities her degree could lead to.

“There are so many careers you can pursue—from software developer or cyber security specialist to project manager or artificial intelligence (AI) engineer. These careers also exist over almost every industry making this degree very versatile.”

When it comes to study life, Lana has a favourite spot on campus where she feels most productive and connected.

“The Auchmuty Library is my favourite space on campus and where I spend most of my time. It offers a great balance between quiet zones for individual focus and more social areas for group work. I particularly appreciate the meeting rooms. These rooms have whiteboards and screens which are perfect for creating engaging, collaborative study sessions with my peers.”

Those group sessions have also helped her build some amazing friendships.

“From my first days at university, I’ve made many lasting friendships with my classmates. We not only hangout socially but are also able to support each other with our studies, which has made my experience much more enjoyable,” Lana shares. “I’ve also built great connections with several tutors, who are always approachable and willing to help. Having these relationships from the beginning gave me a strong sense of belonging at the University.”

During her studies, Lana has been impressed by the hands-on learning and support she’s received.

“The course content is relevant and up-to-date, and the learning is well-supported by hands-on experiences through career-ready placements,” she says. “We have access to industry-standard tools, practical projects, and knowledgeable tutors who are genuinely supportive. This environment has helped me build both the technical and soft skills I’ll need in the workplace, and it’s preparing me for a successful career in tech.”

A highlight of her degree has been connecting with people in the industry through university run events.

“These events have allowed me to speak directly with employers, learn about different career pathways, and better understand what skills are in demand. It’s been incredibly motivating to hear from people working in the field and to see how the knowledge and skills I’m developing in my degree apply in real-world settings.”

Now, Lana is giving back through her role as Diploma Support Peer. “It’s been great being able to support other diploma students from a student’s perspective.”

After graduating Lana hopes to pursue a career as a Project Manager or work in a role related to AI.

“I have always enjoyed leadership roles and love the communication and organisational aspects of project management. At the same time, I’m really fascinated by the potential of AI and how it’s transforming industries.”

What excites her most about computer science is being part of projects that make a difference.

“Whether it’s leading a team to bring an idea to life or working on AI that improves accessibility or efficiency, there’s always a chance to do something meaningful.”

She shares a message to future students that is full of encouragement and hope.

“Back yourself, even if you’re taking an alternative path. You don’t need to have it all figured out from day one, there’s plenty of support available if you’re willing to reach out,” she shares. “Also, try to connect with others in your program early on. Having a good group of peers to study and share ideas with makes a huge difference. Everyone’s journey looks different, and that’s okay.”

Lana’s journey has been about building confidence, finding her place, and pursuing a career that fuses creativity with purpose. And as she puts it, “the possibilities in tech are limitless.”
