Balancing creativity and critical thinking through law and communications
Lucia is combining analytical thinking with creative expression through her Bachelor of Laws (Honours) and Bachelor of Media and Communications (majoring in Public Relations) at the University of Newcastle.
Currently studying full-time at NUspace, Lucia was drawn to the degree combination because it allowed her to pursue two areas she has long been interested in. “I chose to study this degree because I really enjoyed legal studies in high school and have always been interested in pursuing a career in the legal field,” she explains. “I was drawn to the way law involves critical thinking, problem solving, and understanding how rules shape society.”
At the same time, Lucia wanted to continue exploring her creative interests. “I have always had a creative side and a strong interest in the media and communications space,” she says. “Being able to combine law and communication has been a great fit for me because it allows me to explore both of these interests.”
Education has always been important in Lucia’s family, helping shape her decision to pursue university. “Education has always been strongly valued in my family,” she says. “Both of my parents placed a lot of importance on education and supporting my academic goals.”
Lucia enjoys studying at NUspace, where she has found spaces that support both her learning and social connections. “My favourite space in NUspace is the library, specifically the designated law section as it’s a great, quiet space to get work done,” she says. “I also love the café on campus as my friends and I love getting a coffee and catching up between classes.”
Outside of university, Lucia keeps busy balancing work, study and time with family and friends. She works in casual administration and client services for her family business and in retail at fashion retailer KOOKAI, where she has developed strong communication and customer service skills.
Throughout her degree, Lucia has appreciated the practical opportunities available to students. “Some highlights from the program so far have definitely been the many practical opportunities we are offered and exposed to throughout our studies,” she says, including career expos, networking opportunities and workshops focused on resume writing and interview preparation.
These experiences have helped Lucia start thinking about how she might combine her two fields of study in the future. “At this stage, I’m interested in a career that allows me to combine elements from both fields,” she says.
Her advice to future students is simple: “Go at your own pace and not feel pressured to have everything figured out straight away. University is a time to learn, grow, and explore different opportunities.”
