Growing as a nurse, one placement at a time

For Annabel Kelly, nursing was never just a career choice. Inspired by helping care for her grandmother through breast cancer and Parkinson's disease, she knew from an early age she wanted to support others through some of life's most difficult moments.

"I have always felt pulled to study nursing... I have been a part-time carer for my nan for as long as I can remember and I simply loved being able to support her and make her feel a little bit more cared for when she is losing the ability to do things herself."

Now in the final year of her Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Newcastle, Annabel has discovered that some of the most valuable learning happens outside the classroom.

"This degree has been absolutely incredible. My favourite memories are my amazing placements in a variety of different areas, such as emergency, palliative care, and justice health, which were incredible experiences that definitely altered my perspective on Nursing as a career."

Experiencing different healthcare settings has helped Annabel build practical skills, while exploring where she'd like to take her career after graduation.

One experience that had a lasting impact was completing an overseas study experience in rural Fiji through the New Colombo Plan.

"In my second year I was lucky enough to complete an overseas study experience through the New Colombo Plan to rural Fiji."

The experience gave her a new appreciation for Australia's healthcare system and the role nurses play around the world.

"Fiji was truly the highlight of my whole degree, and I encourage anyone to complete an overseas study tour as it will most definitely make you a better, more compassionate and well-rounded health professional."

Alongside placements, Annabel says the University's facilities and teaching have helped prepare her for professional practice.

"I also love the nursing facilities we are able to use, and love to use the library as I feel it’s a great facility and helps me stay motivated and locked in on my university work."

As graduation approaches, she already feels ready to begin her career.

"University has most definitely made me career ready for when I graduate at the end of this year."

She credits the support of placement facilitators, the University's nursing facilities and Program Convenor, Dr Michelle Stubbs, with helping build her confidence throughout the degree.

Receiving the Tertiary Health Undergraduate Scholarship also helped ease financial pressure during her studies.

"I chose to use this money to make voluntary repayments towards my HECS debt. I will be graduating with virtually no debt."

After graduation, Annabel hopes to work as an Emergency Registered Nurse, drawn to the fast-paced environment and the opportunity to support people when they need it most.

"Emergency is an amazing field to work in, and I love the fast-paced, forever changing environment."

Her advice to future nursing students is simple.

"The Bachelor of Nursing program at the University of Newcastle is an incredible nursing program. My advice would be to embrace every opportunity that becomes available."
