Turning a dream into reality thanks to the Australian Defence Force
For Tim Robertson, the path to the University of Newcastle began with a childhood fascination that never faded. “I have a memory of going to the bicentennial Air Show at Richmond, as we arrived an F15 was flying its display. I looked up at it as it flew overhead, engines glowing orange, and little boy me just thought yep, I want to be a part of that.” That moment sparked a lifelong passion for aviation and ultimately led him to enlist in the Air Force.
Now studying a Bachelor of Mechatronics Engineering (Honours) on campus full-time, Tim is part of the Defence University Sponsorship program. “My job is essentially to be a full-time student. It’s a lot like being in the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA), but with the added ease of being almost non-military, so total focus is on getting your academic studies done.”
As the first in his family to pursue a degree, Tim’s journey has been shaped by determination and curiosity. “I’ve always wanted to study a degree. I just took the long way around is all: I’m an electrician and also completed an Advanced Diploma of Electrical Engineering… So here I am rounding out my engineering qualifications with a full degree.”
Choosing mechatronics was a deliberate step toward the future. “Mechatronics is all about embedded systems, robotics, and machine learning – that sounds like the future to me.” He’s found joy in the complexity of his studies: “In a very nerdy way, I’m excited about learning the science and maths of how interconnected the various physical domains are… There’s something magical about it all.”
Tim credits the University’s support services for helping him overcome challenges. “Some of the learning support services have been helpful, maths PASS sessions and drop-ins were invaluable to getting me through all the heavy engineering maths – I had several ‘ah-hah’ moments during these sessions.” He’s also built friendships that have made a big difference: “I have made some wonderful new friendships so far who have been invaluable as study buddies, or just someone to vent frustrations to now and then.”
Looking ahead, Tim is excited about his future in the Air Force. “Seriously though, I’m looking forward to getting involved and finding out what the ADF has to offer, beyond the entry level positions that are advertised to the public.”
His advice to others considering study? “If you have the time in your busy life to fit in some extra learning, take a look at your options. You might be surprised at what is available to you.”
