From high school to higher education, Madi has embraced the journey of learning with curiosity and resilience.

Originally entering the University of Newcastle through the Schools Recommendation Scheme to study a Bachelor of Biotechnology, Madi quickly discovered a passion not only for biology and science, but also for the business elements embedded in the curriculum.

“I loved biology and the science components, but I also loved the business aspects of some subjects,” she shared. “[It] made me reconsider my choice of study.”

Facing challenges during her initial degree, Madi sought support from university services and ultimately transitioned to a Diploma in Science – a move that offered the flexibility to pursue her interests at her own pace.

The Diploma in Science proved to be the perfect fit. “[It allowed me] to continue studying science at my own pace”, she said. Speaking to the flexibility of the program, Madi said “some subjects are offered online which has allowed me to complete the work in my own time and have flexibility with my time outside classes”.

Throughout her time at university, Madi has built meaningful connections and found a sense of belonging. From working with the Student Association to attending campus events like the DJ competition and Autonomy Day, she’s made lifelong friends. Her involvement with the Newcastle Christian Students Club at both Ourimbah and Callaghan campuses also provided a supportive community.

“[University] can be really daunting,” she said. “But having those small pockets where I felt like I belonged really made university feel like home.”

The quality of education at the University of Newcastle has been a highlight. “I originally chose the University of Newcastle for the placements included in science programs”, Madi recalls. Through her studies, Madi has gained hands-on experience in labs, worked with PhD students, and completed practical courses in chemistry and biology.

Support services have also played a vital role in her journey. “The support I have received from the University has been incredibly beneficial to my studies, particularly during my time studying the diploma. I have received assistance from the pathways team when deciding what to pursue and how that could align with my future career goals”, she said.

The diploma has equipped Madi with essential skills – study techniques, time management, and personal growth. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and grown in many ways”, she shared.

Looking ahead, Madi plans to pursue a Bachelor of Business, with aspirations to further study in health and management. “[I want to use my talents in business] to work in science, advocacy, or health.”

Her goal is to improve public communication around preventative healthcare and advocate for vulnerable communities. “The skills I’ve developed through my diploma will help me understand scientific studies and principles to make the most impact for people in our community.”

For anyone considering a Diploma at the University of Newcastle, Madi offers this advice: “Just apply! A diploma is a lot less daunting, as you are only signing up for a one-year program. If you’re wanting to work full-time alongside study or don’t have the option to not work full time it is incredibly flexible for that lifestyle. If you haven’t studied in a long time or struggled studying at school, the skills you learn through the enabling courses will give you a head start on how to succeed at university. It really will be the most rewarding experience!”

Our Pathway Diplomas offer the flexibility, practical support, and credit pathways students need – helping them grow in confidence, make meaningful connections, and open up new career and study opportunities.
