Luke’s professional journey began in the world of exercise and sports science, but it was his growing interest in workplace wellbeing that set him on a new path.

Now working as a National Health, Wellbeing & Injury Management Manager for a national equipment rental company, Luke plays a key role in supporting employees through health initiatives and injury management programs.

With nearly a decade of experience across workers compensation and defence contracting, he’s developed a strong understanding of the psychological challenges faced by different industries and he’s now building on that knowledge through postgraduate study at the University of Newcastle.

“I’ve always had an interest in injury management and return to work,” Luke said.

“Improving the health and wellbeing of employees has been a constant focus in every role I’ve had.”

Luke completed his undergraduate degree in Exercise and Sports Science at the University of Newcastle’s Ourimbah campus in 2014. After years of hands-on experience in the field, he returned to the University to study the Master of Workplace Mental Health and Wellbeing.

“I wanted formal qualifications to support my career progress,” Luke said.

“The program was perfect. It’s part-time, online, and flexible enough to fit around my full-time job and personal life.”

"Having studied at the University of Newcastle before, I knew it was a trusted and recognised University, so it was a no-brainer.”

One of the highlights of the program for Luke has been learning directly from professionals in the psychology field.

“It’s been great to hear from people with real-world experience,” he said.

“The lecturers are also really supportive and understand that we’re balancing study with work and life.”

The flexibility of the program has been key to maintaining that balance.

“It’s self-paced, so I can work on assessments when it suits me. That’s made a huge difference in being able to keep up with everything.”

Luke has already seen the impact of his studies in his day-to-day work.

“The course has helped me apply new knowledge in my role. It’s improved how I talk about psychological wellbeing and how I support the business.”

Outside of work and study, Luke lives in Sydney with his dog and enjoys staying active through running, hiking, going to the gym, and spending time at the beach.

Looking ahead, Luke hopes to specialise in workplace psychological health within a global company.

“This space is evolving and becoming more important in everyday life, and I want to be part of that change,” he said.

His advice to others considering the program? “Give it a crack! It’s informative, relevant, and helps you grow both professionally and personally.”
