Now 30 and in the postgraduate Juris Doctor/Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice program at the University of Newcastle, Liam is thriving – not only in the classroom but also in the workplace.
Returning to law school wasn’t part of Liam’s original plan. After starting a Bachelor of Laws/Bachelor of Arts at the University of Newcastle in 2013, he completed his arts degree but walked away from law, finding the prospect of two more years of full-time study overwhelming. He took a role with the Australian Public Service and left the legal path behind – or so he thought.
Years later, a spark was reignited. “I read an article about Susan Kiefel, the first woman Chief Justice of the High Court,” Liam says. “She left school at 15 and worked as a secretary in a law firm before studying law at night. Her story reminded me that a false start isn’t fatal. I’d already finished high school and had been accepted into law school once – why couldn’t I do it again?”
Now 30 and in the postgraduate Juris Doctor/Graduate Diploma of Legal Practice program at the University of Newcastle, Liam is thriving – not only in the classroom but also in the workplace. He works part-time as a paralegal in a commercial law firm, splitting his time between research, contract proofreading, and administrative duties.
“One of the most valuable things I’ve gained from studying law here is learning how to think like a lawyer. I’ve become more logical and coherent in how I solve problems – and that’s changed how I approach life in general.”
Liam’s passion for mooting (a simulated courtroom appeal) has also enriched his experience. “The law school is so integrated into the Newcastle legal community. I’ve mooted in front of local magistrates, judges, and barristers. The practical exposure has been incredible.”
He also credits the program’s structure as a hidden strength. “You will find that the skills and knowledge you gain in the more foundational subjects will help in later ones.”
Now working on a journal article under academic supervision, Liam is fully embracing the second chance he gave himself. “When I was younger, I floundered. Now, with more life experience, I’ve approached study with intention and discipline – and it’s made all the difference.”
His advice? “If law feels like what you’re meant to do, don’t be afraid to come back to it. It’s not about being perfect – it’s about showing up, doing the work, and finding your place in it.”
