Championing justice through sincerity and action
Inspired by a strong sense of social justice, law student Lachlan is using his studies and leadership to make a meaningful difference.
Driven by a passion for advocacy and community, Bachelor of Laws (Honours) / Diploma of Legal Practice student Lachlan is building a career focused on fairness and social impact. Studying full-time at the University of Newcastle’s NUspace campus, Lachlan is combining academic excellence with hands-on experience to prepare for a future in community-focused legal action.
Lachlan’s interest in law was sparked early in life, when his family’s home water supply was threatened by coal seam gas exploration.
“My dad was involved in the community action group, and I believe this initially sparked my interest in the area,” he says. “I hope to work in community-focused legal action once I graduate.”
The University’s strong focus on practical learning has given Lachlan invaluable real-world experience. Within just six months of starting his degree, he was already meeting with clients through the University’s Legal Centre, a rare opportunity for law students across the country.
“This rare opportunity, afforded to very few students across the country, has made for a practical learning experience.”
Keen to contribute beyond the classroom, Lachlan quickly became involved in the Law Students’ Association, later being elected President in his third year. He also helped design and lead the Sparke Helmore Lawyers AI in Legal Education Forum, one of his proudest achievements so far.
“Some of my lecturers have become my greatest inspirations and mentors,” he says. “[They] have been a significant influence on my young career.”
Outside of study, Lachlan works part-time as a Legal Assistant in Newcastle, where he supports commercial and employment law practices. He leads a busy and active lifestyle, training for a triathlon, playing football for the Lambton Jaffas Junior Football Club, and spending time with friends and family. When he finds a quiet moment, he enjoys reading non-fiction, most recently Barack Obama’s A Promised Land.
Looking ahead to his graduation in 2026, Lachlan hopes to pursue a career in plaintiff-based legal action, specialising in class actions and industrial relations. His ambition is clear: wanting to use law as a tool for fairness and positive social change.
“I hope to work in a field where I can achieve tangible, practical outcomes for those who are disadvantaged, providing access to justice and compassionate representation.”
For those considering a career in law, Lachlan shares a piece of advice that reflects both his personality and his purpose:
“Don’t be serious, be sincere. You need to show people that you care about the outcome. For the law more accessible, practitioners need to be authentic".
As a law student Lachlan is using his studies and leadership to make a meaningful difference.
I hope to work in a field where I can achieve tangible, practical outcomes for those who are disadvantaged.
