Dreams, Design, and Discovery
Growing up in India, Kajal often imagined what it would be like to study in Australia.
“As a child I dreamt of being able to study in Australia for my higher education and eventually with time that dream turned into reality,” she says.
Now enrolled in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) at the University of Newcastle, she’s living the life she once pictured, and is loving every bit of it.
Why the University of Newcastle?
When it came time to choose a university, Kajal knew exactly what she was looking for, and it wasn’t just about location.
“I wanted to have the best experience in Australia, so I chose this University,” she shares.
“Apart from that, the industry connection, career-ready placement, and university life experience played a vital role.”
For Kajal, studying at the University of Newcastle means more than earning a degree, it’s about preparing for the future, building professional connections, and finding a sense of belonging far from home.
A love for construction and hands-on learning
Kajal’s passion for civil engineering came naturally.
“I was always attracted towards construction and the idea of building,” she explains.
The hands-on, practical nature of the program keeps her motivated and excited about what’s ahead.
A full campus experience
For Kajal, university life extends well beyond the classroom. She often heads to the library in her spare time, not just to study, but to connect with others.
“Mainly because that is the place where I meet and get to know new people other than lectures.”
She also enjoys spending time at the UNSA building and Bar on the Hill, calling them “great places to hang around with friends.”
Kajal is also passionate about contributing to the campus community through volunteering.
“I love to build connections when I contribute as volunteer at UNSA events,” she says.
One standout memory was a trip she took with Adventist students on campus, which she still fondly recalls as a highlight of her experience.
Teamwork and support
One of Kajal’s favourite parts of university life is working with others.
“Meeting new people in lectures, solving problems together has been a highlight of my degree.”
She’s also appreciated the supportive environment at the University of Newcastle.
“Everything about the University is so good, from the teaching methods, tutors, extra help sessions (PASS), to all the activities and events. Together it’s a great mix of learning and entertainment.”
Feeling at home away from home
Starting university in a new country can be daunting, but Kajal says she felt supported from day one.
“The University staff and every co-ordinator” helped her feel safe and at home.
She encourages other international students to get involved and embrace the experience.
“The University of Newcastle hosts many activities and events to ensure every student has the best experience. Many societies like UNSA work for the welfare of students and want them to feel safe and connected.”
Building a better future
As she nears the end of her degree, Kajal is excited about applying everything she’s learned.
“I wish to give my best skills and help make Australia a better place,” she says. “The idea of designing, building and being on the construction site,” really excites her.
Advice for future students
Kajal hopes her story encourages others who are considering the same path.
“It was my best decision. You will never regret it and will look back with great memories and experiences to share.”
For Kajal, studying at the University of Newcastle has been a journey of growth, friendships, volunteering, and unforgettable memories.
From hours spent in the library to big plans for the construction site, she’s making the most of every moment, and she’s just getting started.
