At just 20 years old, Chaitanya is forging a path to international law through ambition and perseverance.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Chaitanya was always community minded. Participating in coastal clean-ups and disaster relief efforts in her youth, she found her passion for helping people. A consistent honour student throughout her schooling, she left the Philippines at 18 to pursue higher education in Australia.

To gain the marks for her studies in Biomedicine and Law, Chaitanya enrolled in Open Foundation. Offering an embedded support system, the program provided her a strong foundation and the flexibility to tailor her courses to her interests. “I was able to choose subjects that aligned to my degree, which gave me a smooth transition to undergrad”, she said.

Open Foundation was also instrumental in providing high-quality support and resources to ensure academic success.  From dedicated Student Liaison Officers (SLOs) to Peer Assisted Study Sessions (PASS), the University equips students not just academically, but personally. Chaitanya credits her SLO, Ms. Olivia Oswald as a mentor who guided her through opportunities and provided invaluable support. “She opened doors and opportunities for me and became a sister when I needed a family to lean on”.

Through Open Foundation, she built lasting friendships and connections with fellow students, often spending early mornings at the beach or joining the Mountaineering Club for hiking and rock climbing. “I would go out often with the student residents for a swim or walk in Merewether or Nobby’s Beach early in the morning,” she recalls.

Her ultimate career goal is to become an international lawyer, advocating for marginalised communities in third-world countries and ensuring justice is served for the defenceless. “Helping the vulnerable, less fortunate, and marginalised people excites me most about working in my chosen industry,” she says. “By fighting for rights, ensuring justice is served for those who have been wronged.”

For anyone considering studying at the University of Newcastle, especially Open Foundation, she encourages them to take risks and embrace challenges. “Go for it! Take risks and don’t be afraid to make mistakes.”

For Chaitanya, Open Foundation was not just a stepping stone but a transformative experience that equipped her with the tools and confidence to pursue her goals.
